Clavinet D-6 power supply specs

Didn't think it would be this hard to search for, but can't find the proper specs on a wall wart power supply for a D-6.  People forgetting to turn off the clavs on rentals and "keyboard is dead" on multiple occasions.  One tried to replace the 9V battery and ripped the connector right off.

Varying reports from 6v to 9v, no mention of barrel connector pin size (maybe 2.5mm or 3mm?)

Anyone have any reference to specs so I can source generically?  Thanks

Center positive 9V 300mA min or 6V 600 mA min.  Voltage isn't a huge issue with D.C., just make sure the adapter has the mA rating or more. Dunno on the size. Have some calipers?

Ben Bove

Perfect, thanks.  I may try inserting different plugs to see if I can find a size match if I can't find my calipers.

Hi .-)

Beware !  Power connector on the D6 is center negative !!  Use a linear supply, not a switching supply, which will probably cause annoying ripple and other artifacts. Any regulated 9V / 100mA supply will do. (...remember, the circuit only needs some mA's...)

Just to clear things up,
so it's center Positive or Center Negative?

there's 2 different informations here

Hi :-)

Take a look onto the schematics (and the 'real thing', too):

Clavinet C, D6, E7, Pianet Duo have center negative.

You're totally right, thanks

I know this is a long dormant thread, but...

I'd like to use a power adaptor with my D-6, but it's clear that the pin in the connecter built into the Clav is a smaller diameter than what you generally find today.  I have five modern, 9-volt, center negative adaptors, that work perfectly with pedals, but are very loose when I try them with the Clav.

Does anyone know the specs of the pin inside the Clav's connector, or have a suggestion for a power adaptor that fits it reasonably snugly?

Not sure what the original size was, I have been using an old "RadioShack" size K adaptor on mine when I dont have a 9v battery handy. O.D 5.0mm I.D. 2.1mm
It seems to hold pretty good without falling out.

Thanks Vance. I was quite happily using batteries, but I recently added a noise gate pedal, and the optimum setting of the pedal varies with the preamp output level. I figure that I'll get more steady output levels from an adapter (no battery drain effect) so I can set-and-forget the noise gate.

(BTW, I love my MXR Smart Gate pedal with the Clav. It makes an amazing reduction in the noise level -- and is "smart" enough to allow notes to sustain, too, without cutting them off.)

Thanks Alan,
Hope the info on the adaptor helps. I appreciate you sharing your perspective on the MXR Smart Gate. I may have to try that. It would be nice to replace the 9v battery with an ac adaptor and still keep the low/no noise benefit. I've wasted so many 9v batteries forgetting to disconnect the battery/turn off the clav after playing.

Been there, done that, too!
