Hi, I got many project with my Rhodes Mark 1 Stage piano 1980 (Yeah really...)
i'm not a really good Rhodes players, and i record it direct in a mixer, to my laptop and put somes effect (vst)

www.soundclick.com/dezuets/dplingres

Just check under de song name to know witch are made with a Rhodes...
many projects includes a Hammond M3 Organ(1959), plugin in Natives Instruments B-4 plugins (for the Leslie and Drive)

The first project include not a RHodes, but a Hohner Pianet T, its interresting how it sounds, but its not so loud (some work to do..) with a very ''background sounding'' Organ..

These are more like ''rap'' beats and supose to have Vocal (in french)

enjoy, stay tunes, more project to come!

Here's a couple of clips of me learning to improvise over the changes of the song "Perdido". The Jazz thing is still kinda new for me, but fun! My rig is a 1980 Mark II Stage Piano going into a 1977 Fender Twin (clean channel). I used a Shure SM57 mic (pointed between the center and the edge of the speaker, close to the grill) going into my Digidesign 001 to record it (no effects or EQ). There's a couple a times where it clips a little bit (input level set a little too hot on the 001). Oh well, just for fun anyway....

I wish I could do walking bass lines like that BJT3.  Unfortunately, I've only been playing seriously for about a year now and I'm uncoordinated as hell with my left hand.

Dan, ya, it's actually pretty knew for me too. I've been playing since I was 11 (33 now), but haven't done that much with my left hand and just learning the basics about playing Jazz. Eventually I'd like to try walking Bass on the pedal board/ lower register of my Hammond A100 organ, but as you can probably tell from the recording, I'm still pretty clumsy with my left hand, let alone trying to use my feet...

Hey BJT3, does your mark II have plastic keys? it sounds very clean/bell-ish to me. Might be the way of recording either, of course.

I'm just asking, while i'm looking for a rhodes. Checking different sounds of the mk1 and mk2.  :P

Yeah, it really does sound bellish! I have a 1980. Mark II too, but mine does not sound like that at all, maybe only when I crank up the dyno preamp overtone control.

It's got the wooden keys. It has the original hammer tips which I imagine have hardened a bit. Maybe that's whats making it sound more "bell-ish"?

tehu, j'aime trop tes démos. Ca déchire vraiment  :D  le son de ton M3...sublime !

The sound from the Mk2 is really different from my Mk1 (1973), now i can hear it. But it sound cool with the Twin Reverb, i recognize the "timbre", the dynamic of this marvelous amp.

Thanks for all the demos.

No problem. Been meaning to post something for a while and  just got the SM57 for Christmas so I figured I'd go ahead test it out.... Good to hear people's feedback. Not sure if the differences your hearing are just the way I have mine set up, or the Mark I vs. Mark II thing. They say that you can make any Rhodes sound like any model but for now I don't have "the bug" to go making any major changes on mine. Looking forward to hearing other people's rigs...

Here's a clip of my Mark V going into my Musicman HD-150 and 4x12 cab.
First part is absolutely no effects, then I kicked in the amp's phaser in for the end.
Nice how it gets both chimey and barky, right?

Thanks Dan, that Mark V is my sweet sweet baby.

I love how your Mark I is all woolly and thick.  I much prefer that sound to an anemic tinny Rhodes.

It's cool hearing everyone's gear, right?

O.K., I apologize in advance for being the uncoolest among all you rippin' improvisors by posting this.  Really nice stuff, everybody.  I'm offering up my Rhodes in its capacity as an amazing accompanying instrument in a late-night runthrough of (of course) "Rainy Days And Mondays".

Forgive the tired voice- I'd just come off 5 nights of shows.

Oh- '79 Stage 88.  Recorded direct through a TMP-1 tube pre to disk with a tiny bit of chorus and verb.

Mine sounds way better   :D , but that's obvious off course.
I'd like to post some clips of my Rhodes too in the future, but I don't have the right gear to do so. Maybe sometime in the future.

This is my 1975 Rhodes 88 with wooden hammers:

http://www.audiorealism.se/tmp/rhodes88.mp3

It has a preamp onboard (I think its the optional one that Rhodes supplied) going directly into the computer via a DI. There are some anomalies in the sound (besides occasional missed notes), for example you can hear one of the tonebars smacking against the harp brace. I have fixed that since recording this.. Let me know what you think..! :)

Mike, nice playing on that clip.  It's nice to hear someone willing to turn up the treble a little on a wooden hammer Rhodes for a change.  Most people with older Rhodes want to get away from that brighter sound, so it's a nice change of pace.  It's not better or worse than the more mellow sound, just different.  (Actually quite similar to my 1978 Rhodes)

Here's another clip of my 1978 Stage 73 run through my current amp (much better than the one I used in my last MP3 in this thread!)  I've now got a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, one of the special run ones with brown tolex, warm tubes, and a JBL speaker.  Here's some completely improvised material (I literally had no plan on what I was going to play going in other than just using a C-minor key and a nice slowly-progressing intro)

Nice, I like the way you have your Rhodes set up. Sounds close to the pickups and with the tines high enough above the pickups where it starts to get that roundish, almost wurly like sound. Very different than the way i have mine set up right now. I love how different these things can sound from one another.

So, here's a full song played with my Rhodes MK II > MXR Phase 100 (in the bridge) > Twin Reverb and a Hammond M3 > Leslie 760. Well, I think, you can't really judge the Rhodes, 'cause it's all mixed (but not edited btw.). It's the first song on my myspace profile and it's a Princecover 'How come you don't call me anymore':

Well, it's not me in person, that's right... it's my girlfriend and it was her first studiosession. There are two cuts within the leadvocals into the bridge and out of the bridge, cause this was a better take. The rest is the second or third one (I can't really remember) and some overdubs in the endpart... that's it. took about 3 hours ;-) Band is played live in studio (except the organ and the second guitar).

Hi everyone,

check out this site:
http://www.karstenkramer.eu/projects/Karsten-Kramer-trio/Karsten-Kramer-trio-Frameset.htm
and look for my song "Between the mirror". It's a Mark III ek 10, (plastic keys, but I love them!) but I don't use the ek 10 section in this song (there will be others later). Rhodes is recorded with VTB1 StudioProjects Tube preamp and a helixboard firewire-mixer directly to a mac. Bass is directly, drums with micros, recorded live, no overdubs. Then added some reverb etc.

Greetings,
McCoy

Thanks.  It was actually made in late June '78, so I've got one of the first handful of Rhodes with the key pedestal bump from the factory.  The action is super smooth and super quick.  It's actually lighter than any acoustic piano I've ever played, but not in a bad way.  I've still got a great feel from the keys, I just don't have to put in as much effort to play louder notes as I might otherwise.

it seems to my hears this 78 model needs some adjustments and a better amp(?). originally its tone uses to get more overtones.

thinking electric sometimes helps though like for guitars this means taste and try various models until you find the right one.
this can change a musician playing sensation and the way he might feel his piano.

also this depends on the tone you wish to produce. round, sharp, bellish ...
looks like users like to hear the clear side of discreet harmonics. a nice preamp should do this job by boosting the right frequencies just where it needs. a nice phaser effect can do that too.

Here's a quick something I put together, no effects.

I mic'd my vox amp with an SM57 for the center channel, then amp output was then connected to the stereo phaser which was sent stereo to the mixing board.

Thought I'd put this on here, a fun project for us. Can hear the piano most clearly on Mercy Mercy Mercy i guess.

Actually only two of these tracks use my 1976 Mk1, the others are using a Yamaha p90. Be interested if it is obvious which...
