bonjour les amis, this nice topic reminds me a quite rare kind of wire between pickups on a 26 74 stage 73 i noticed recently. this wire was a single one (not stranded). the tone of this piano was some different, more muddy. just missing the highest frequencies. i cannot affirm the wire is the only cause of the timbre thickness though it might be. i'll examine the subject closer and soon. i don't know the right week in 70 though i can say i have had recently a 13 71 with torringtons in my hands. the way to recognize raymacs -if i simplify- is to check the tuning springs. if they are the big model so the tine is a raymac one. the raymacs coating is textured and the springs grip on the tines pretty well. the torringtons coating should be smooth and even/regular.

i have the same single hammer and yes it comes from the Mk4 proto production. would need more friends to get a regular octave.

hi Rob, beautiful unit, nice detailed pictures and comments.
my guess is this hole would allow to drive the sound from the cab up to the top when the lid is open just like with a piano. the early 1965 Home Piano chopped prototype i own shows 5 smaller holes right under the keybed (see attached photos). i tend to think they were originally made for the same acoustic purpose.

the 5 original sections for felt tips hammers are:
1.   1 > 29
2. 30 > 39
3. 40 > 54
4. 55 > 65
5. 66 > 73

you should keep the Mk1 unless you enjoy with the Mk2 tone, clicking dampers and feel (...). anyway the preamp tremolo is really intoxicating and provides it's own tone color masking the original timbre specs. this does not help the amateur. i won't say anything more about identifying pianos since it's pretty obvious for a Rhodes tech. are you sure Ben??

this is a prototype for the Home Piano model that was produced later in the 70s. the cabinet was chopped. i still ignore the reason why. strange added legs that do not match the original design and HR's habits.
the keys are a special model with a longer front cap. there is a stamp on the first keys that reads 10 65. the damper bar looks primitive.
tines in the mid are tapered Raymac. the other ones in the hi and low registers are supposed to be Singer tines. 3 Torrington ones do a replacement job and they sound pretty weak with more overtones.
all of the Jordan preamp pots read 66 21. the mechanical parts are similar to the 65 suitcase mentioned above with the same hammers specs. the hammers show the piano does not have been played that much. the FR logo is a early metal one. the power supply came with handscript notes from Harold Rhodes about the diagram and components mods. i guess it did not provide entire satisfaction.

like judge Dresd' said, there is a hidden stamp number on the woodden frame.
maybe you should check out the serial number on the Rhodes sticker.
just take a look at the "Rhodes Stage piano production survey" topic,
try to find the closest serial number and the related harp stamp number(s).

75 harps use to have that special varnish tint like yours.

i do believe Herbie is still able to play at such a high level. he still could find today some fine vintage keyboards and the right persons to play with the same magic. i have heard that he played an ARP Odyssey not so long time ago in Montreux. a tech told me he was very fast by getting back the right controls and settings. i'm a believer. i'm praying for this to happen.

everyone should know why jingle bells and Rhodes pianos are like close friends.

i had the same question about Jan Hammer's habits in the MO years. i noticed this was more usual with early suitcase models that did not get the extra insert device onto the rail. if you had to plug a fuzz-wha or an effect device you needed to take the harp output and run to the effect pedal and then go back to the preamp input. this was only possible with no harp cover.
there is this Live in Germany 71 great video showing Joe Zawinul with his ring modulator dropped directly on the piano harp low tonebars.
around 70 Herbie Hanc**k had the same problems about connecting effects. also this nice photo in studio with Buster Williams and Billy Hart (Crossings recording sessions ?) where you can see screwdrivers laying on the piano harp for regulating and servicing purposes.


usually there is a stamp onto the frame just under the harp woodden support. it is necessary to unscrew the left one because it might hide the discreet stamp. however this only will give you the frame assembling date which is several months prior to piano achievement.

i bet this 88 notes was produced in the Fender Rhodes era and was achieved in the new Rhodes era. it has both the small Fender Rhodes rail logo and the big Rhodes logo at the back. so it might be from the end of the Fender Rhodes era. i mean around 20th week of 1974. you should check the lowest keys and look for a date. the woodden frame also used to show the date of its assembling on the left side.
changing names can explain this clean harp got no sticker or dating codes though this is very rare. some pianos in this short transition period escaped the factory total control.

the first metal tab bump mod has a different action since it is set in the middle of the key pedestal. later bump mod -called Marcel mod- came in 1977. its goal is to reduce the action length by getting a hammer higher resting position. then this mod was adopted and introduced into the keys production around mid 78.
Marcel mod is from french Rhodes tech veteran Marcel Bourdon. i tend to think this is true since i have had in my hands a stage model with Buz Watson's personal business card and "Marcel felt mod" hand script mention from 1977.
i'm not sure that Marcel got a patent for this mod.
some would suggest this Marcel could be french boxer Marcel Cerdan because of the punchy  feature.

it seems to my hears this 78 model needs some adjustments and a better amp(?). originally its tone uses to get more overtones.

thinking electric sometimes helps though like for guitars this means taste and try various models until you find the right one.
this can change a musician playing sensation and the way he might feel his piano.

also this depends on the tone you wish to produce. round, sharp, bellish ...
looks like users like to hear the clear side of discreet harmonics. a nice preamp should do this job by boosting the right frequencies just where it needs. a nice phaser effect can do that too.

just let me add a slight correction about dates. all plastic hammers models were introduced from late 75. they also had same neoprene cubic tips like before. the changing of tips profile was introduced from early 76 only with flat pedestal keys and white felts glued to hammers.

playing a late 75 or an early 76  is very different. i mean their tones and responses won't be the same though they both get plastic hammers. the hammers plastic changed for a lighter and smoother quality. white nylon version.

all i can say is the Rhodes piano history is complicated because i've had in my hands some rare prototypes and transition models.
the same year does not mean obviously the same model. changes and improvements did not start with the "happy" new year!
