I am completely mystified.  When playing intervals, I get a third, clangorous tone much lower than either note in the interval.

If I play a perfect 5th, I also get a note one octave below the bottom note.

A perfect 4th gives me an extra note two octaves down from the top note.

A major 3rd generates a tone two octaves down from the bottom note.

A minor 3rd generates a major 17th (2 octaves plus a major 3rd) down from the bottom note.

Does anyone know what this is?

Hi folks!  I have just embraced the fact that my new hobby is to be Rhodes maintenance.

I've got a Mark I 73, from 1971, in pretty good shape.  I also have two beat up Mark I's that I use for parts.

I've only played 6 or 8 gigs on the thing, but I break tines every time.  Like 3 or 4 tines.  I do have a fairly heavy touch, and it sounds so good when you really lay into it, but this really seems excessive.

I did have one gig, where I spent the week before pounding on it to try and break what I could and fix it before the gig.  No tines were broken on that gig!  Thinking my problem was solved, I gigged with it again without any maintenance beforehand.  Boink, bonk, plink, and plunk--- 4 tines broke on the gig!

These tines must get brittle with age, right?  I suspect also that I don't have the proper hammer tips.

Does anyone have any ideas why the tines are breaking so much?  I'm inclined to buy all new tines, but they aint cheap!
