My name is Mark and I am a keyboard player from Sydney Australia who loves vintage keyboards,in particular Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos.I own a Rhodes Mk1 Stage and Suitcase 73 from the 1970s and a Wurlitzer 200A. I love your site and its members contributions as a support, help and reference base of vintage keys and wonder if you can help.I had my original Rhodes Mk1 Stage 73 modified with a Dyno Piano mod in the late 70s and it is in need of repair. This was the original mod as done by the inventor Chuck Monte from the USA.
If anyone out there has a copy of the original  schematic diagrams for these mods? Would you be able to provide a schematic diagram for the Dyno Mod and the Tri-Stereo tremolo that CHUCK INVENTED?
I would really appreciate your help if at all possible.
  • PS I have every issue of Keyboard Magazine from issue 1 in the 1970s to now with it's sad demise as a print issue magazine and it's incorporation into Electronic Musician and would be only too ready to help and reciprocate embers for their help for any past articles and stories over the the last 40+ years.

For Sale / Fender Rhodes Mk 1 Stage 73 for sale Sydney , Australia
« on: March 08, 2018, 10:07:44 PM »
I have restored a few Rhodes pianos over the years and have played them since the 1970s.
At present I have a 1971 original Fender Rhodes Mk1 Stage 73 piano for sale. This one is from the "golden age of early Fender Rhodes- aka 1971" when quality control and build quality was paramount. It has been gone over and had new grommets, damper felts, bump mod added, some hardware replaced, regulated etc and is in great condition and sounds "sweet". Includes lid, original sustain pedal, legs, and even the original owners manual plus some spare tines etc.
Price $3200
I can post some pics and send a video/audio demo to genuine interested buyers on request. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
I also have a Wurlitzer 200A that I am presently completing work on that is also in great condition.
Regards :)

For Sale / Rhodes Mk 1 73 suitcase piano Sydney, Australia

Rhodes Mk1 suitcase 73 piano for sale Sydney, Australia. Serviced and in excellent condition for it's age. Includes stereo tremelo/ vibrato preamp and amp speaker box. A rare and classic instrument. Genuine enquiries welcome PM me.  :) $3500.

hi all Rhodes fan. I have a Stage 73 that alas I have no lid case for. Why previous owners lose or discard these is beyond me?! :'(
Does anyone out there have a plan with the exact dimensions and plan for a Stage 73 lid as I am going to try and make one myself?
Many thanks and much appreciation if you can help.

I recently purchased a stage 73 Rhodes that has a few issues e.g It has an original Chuck Monte 1970s Dyno-my piano and Tri-Tremelo mod kit installed in the preamp rail which is not working and has been disconnected. I had my original Rhodes stage 73 converted in 1976 with the dyno mod, yet got rid of stupidly in the mid 1980s for $200 when Yamaha DX7s were all the rage and Rhodes were often given away!
Trying to re-live my 1970s music career and experiences here.
I'd really like to restore it and get a tech to check/rebuild this preamp and effect mod and get it working properly.
Does anyone out there have a circuit diagram and component listing for this great mod? (i.e composite mod rail with both Dyno eq and tri-tremolo kit installed.)
I would really appreciate any help as so far with my research I had turned up zilch!!??
Many thanks if you can help.

:D hi all Rhodes fans in Australia. I have a fully restored Rhodes mk1 suitcase 73 piano for sale. Sonically and cosmetically in excellent condition. The amp has been reworked and serviced, original speakers, grommets, felts , hammers, pickups etc all A1. Stereo tremelo/ vibrato is awesome. Serious and genuine enquiries only. Home studio use only, not gigged. Will courier anywhere in Australia and carefully pack at buyers expense. $3500 neg.All replies answered. Regards

Hi all Rhodes lovers,
Working on restoring a Rhodes 54 stage and have just about finished BUT am getting a very low signal from the jack out on the preamp rail compared to from the harp ( via RCA).
It's probably X3 the level from the harp compared to from the jack out on the piano preamp rail. I've looked everywhere but can't seem to find a schematic circuit diagram for a Rhodes 54 preamp amp ( the one with 2 slider pots one is volume the other is tone).
Does anyone have a schematic for this preamp?  Possibly there may be a problem from the preamp wiring or components!
Or any suggestions to boost the output level from the jack out rather than use the rca Harp output. I know some people use external preamps e.g VV Tone bomb, but am wondering if there is a simple alternative to check my preamp and level or to boost it.
Great forum and always helpful advice Thanks!!!!

Hi All,
I just recently picked up a Rhodes Stage 54 and am in the process of restoring it. It had the red coil pickups BUT 19 were out!
I know the pickup configuration in a Rhodes 54 were wired in series and different to the 73 and 88 stage models but as the last 10 pickups ( treble end were removed) I need to check the wiring to the harp and earth at the RHS end of the pickup rail.

Can anyone with a 54 Rhodes send me a pic of the far end (RHS treble end) to show the wiring of the pickups?
Or a diagram to show the pickup wiring configuration?
Also what kind of wire is recommended for connecting each pickup?

I've looked everywhere that is obvious but no luck so far!!!
I'm trying to salvage and repair the thread on a Rhodes Stage, screw in leg and the leg flange that attaches to the bottom of the piano case.
Does anyone know the size and type of thread that is on the end of the legs and inside the leg flange?
e.g is it 3/4" or 5/8 and type of thread like AF,Whitworth etc
All help greatly appreciated.

For Sale / For Sale:- Pair of Rhodes Janus 1 speakers/amp-Sydney Australia
« on: September 24, 2011, 09:14:31 PM »
Rhodes Janus 1 Vintage speaker amplifiers.
I have two Vintage Fender Rhodes speaker amps for sale either individually or together.
They were specifically designed for the (Fender) Rhodes electric pianos of the 1970’s.
They comprise 2 X 12” speakers in each cabinet with a stereo amp 100W in each cab to get the best sound from a Stage or Suitcase model Rhodes, or either with the stereo vibrato preamp installed.
One box has had a speaker replaced with a new speaker. The amps also have 2 inputs ( jack) , 2 outputs (XLR) and can power the piano preamp via a 5 pin XLR plug. I have also modified the boxes to achieve a “bright speaker mod” as described by SPEAKEASY VINTAGE KEYBOARDS  in the USA to enhance the frequency respond and sound with 2 piezo tweeters to each box. This gives the Rhodes sound more clarity and better high frequency response for the ultimate 1970’s Rhodes sound.
Both speaker amp boxes are in great shape for vintage gear, fully tested, working and make any Rhodes piano  sound “magic” with the custom designed amp for that 1970’s Rhodes sound. These boxes have had home studio use for the last 20 years with my own Rhode stage piano with the vibrato pre-amp installed.
They are advertised on Ebay au:-
I have decided to reluctantly let them go as I have an overcrowded music studio. They can be tested with my Rhodes Stage 73.
Prefer to go to a "serious Rhodes lover"!! :) ::)
Price negotiable to a ep forum member!

I have 2 Rhodes Janus 1 speaker/amp boxes and a Rhodes Stage 73 Mk1 with a preamp mod with the slider controls and stereo vibrato and I am just checking on how to wire it up for full stereo effect.
Is it simply 5 pin XLR from piano preamp to Janus 1 ( say Left Spk) and then 2 mono  jack leads from this box's Line Outputs to the other Janus 1 ( say Left Spk) line inputs???
Or otherwise?
Just checking on the best way to connect the system.
I'd appreciate any comments,suggestions.

For Sale / Wurlitzer EP200A for sale in Sydney Australia

Wurlitzer EP200A for sale in Sydney Australia $2200AU ono
Wurlitzer refurbished EP 200A Vintage Electric Piano
Up for sale is a Vintage 1970's Wurlitzer EP200A electric piano.
This piano was a Wurlitzer electric piano student model 206 that was used in a music teaching studio. I have had it converted by a reputable piano/keyboard technician into a more practical portable professional 200/ 200A model but without the onboard speakers. The piano includes the legs and music stand. The student models are the exact same piano mechanically and electronically as the professional EP200A  portable models BUT have had no road/touring use as only used in a teaching studio.
All electronics and action etc is in excellent condition and it plays exceptionally well. Any queries/questions answered and inspection  with appointment is welcome. Serious buyers only!
Also advertised elsewhere so I reserve the right to cancel the listing if needed.
Email or call me for any queries:-  ph 0407-272487
In response to a number of queries regarding specifically what has been restored/refurbished in this piano:-
Complete Restoration included the following:-
the piano has been reduced in size by removing the bottom cumbersome amp/speaker section.
Leg plates and legs have been added (the legs are wooden and not the usual chrome legs, they fit perfectly and been custom built.
A new reproduction Sustain Pedal has been added. These are actually sturdier and better built than the original.
The amplifier and vibrato unit has been rebuilt ( the student models did not have the vibrato unit that the more common model 200A had)
A vintage face plate has been added ( an original model 200A faceplate)
An aux output jack has been added for connection to an amplifier or mixer for recording)
An IEC 240V AC receptacle and lead has been added.
Fuse modification board added.
The plastic case moulding has been professionally sprayed black with automotive duco paint.
These modifications have been done by a professional piano technician and restorer. Check out the USA Vintage Vibe website which describes how/why what is normally done to modify a student model Wurlitzer 200 to bring it up to the professional 200A specs. model-chop-video.aspx
Hope this answers most questions. :)

For Sale / Fender Rhodes Mk1 Suitcase for sale in Sydney Australia

Rhodes 73 Suitcase Mk1 for sale in Sydney Australia
This Rhodes is in excellent condition. The Model is 1975 Mk1 Suitcase with 73 keys with the Stereo Tremelo unit “awesome sound”, with the concentric rotary knobs. It plays absolutely beautifully and sounds fantastic. It is complete and includes the lid, legs, amp/speaker cab etc. It has been refurbished by a professional keyboard technician. No tears on tolex case, lid etc. Recently the piano has had music studio use only and is a reluctant sale! I will let the pictures do most of the talking, but this really is a rare and wonderful example of this iconic instrument.

To answer further questions on what has been done on this keyboard by a pro piano tech:-

new tolex vinyl on case, speaker cab, new speaker cloth, new hardware catches, corners, hinges etc
one 12" speaker replaced, 2 piezo tweeter added for better treble sound.
action ,keys, pickups, tynes, electrics etc replaced, refurbished where needed and improved.
new sustain pedal and plate
new pots on volume, tone and tremelo
stereo preamp built so piano can be used as a Stage piano without bottom speaker cab needed to utilise tremelo unit.
in otherwords fully restored to original state.

I forgot to mention, also is included a "custom built powered stereo preamp" that allows the stereo tremelo unit to be used with the piano as a Stage piano ( without needing to use the amp/speaker cab underneath). This allows you to use the piano as a Suitcase Rhodes OR a Stage Rhodes but with the stereo tremelo unit into an amplifier or mixer!. The BEST of BOTH WORLDS a Suitcase or Stage Rhodes!!
