So a few months back I set up my boy's 73 because his acquaintance at Cue Studios had someone
coming in who needed a Rhodes. They kept it for a few days. Today I find out it was for Marcus Miller
and I expect it was Federico Pena who was playing it. Not a big deal but I got a kick out of it. I kept
asking my son to find out if they had any suggestions or comments on the setup but all I got was, "Must
be fine because no one has said anything".  Geez, kids!

Here's a pic of Marcus and the Rhodes is just barely in the picture. Would have been nice if they got
a front shot with Pena playing. Maybe they were just using it as a stand for the Korg.

Bought a pair of satellites a couple years back and they have been sitting for
most of that time. Recently hooked them up and the slave immediately blows the
fuse. This is with or without the speaker cable in. If I disconnect the power cable
from the amp section (it actually plugs into an outlet on the switch panel) the fuse
is fine. So it evidently is in the amp section.

Is this typically a transformer problem or something indicative of the capacitors?
Also, before powering up I did swap the transistors with these.

Buying / Single front leg for Stage model

Looking for a single front leg for stage model. Already have backs, crossbars and one front.

Thanks

What is the acceptable variation on the 24V and 36V pins for the Peterson power supply?

What does it indicate if either is too high or low? Transformer, capacitors, resistors?

Thanks

Tuesday 8/9/2011 at Merrieweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD.

Chick Corea, Jean Luc-Ponty, Lenny White, Stanley Clarke and Frank Gambale
are the current line up.

Scored tix just off center in the first row behind orchestra. Going up early and
putz around Chuck Levin's for awhile then off to the show.

Will try to make sure the boy has his phone charged (why is it he always forgets
to do that) and snap some pics.

The Fender Rhodes Electric Piano / Mini score
July 16, 2011, 10:03:01 PM
Saw a Craigslist ad for some tines at a good price. The seller also had some
odds and ends he included. What I was most excited about was that 10 of the
Mark V rubber mounting blocks for the upper register were in the box.

I've read these greatly improved the timbre and sustain and wondered why
no one has bothered to reproduce them.

Funny thing is that they came with instructions for installation and noted one
ten pack was required for a 73 while two packs were needed for the 88 since
the upper 18 tonebars were supposed to be mounted with them. Of course
no 88 key Mark V's were ever produced.

Can anyone verify if they do make a significant difference?

Won this on ebay last week. It's a converter so you can use the
later 5 pin models with a 4 pin suitcase bottom or satellites. Basically,
it's a pass through for channel signals and provides the 15v for the
5 pin preamp. The only info I could find out was on this forum.

Here's the thread. Look at the bottom of the price list for 1978.
This one seems to be the converter Kit II, looks like they made
a Converter Kit I for a 4 pin preamp and 5 pin bottom.

http://ep-forum.com/smf/index.php?topic=5694.0

At first I only wanted it because it is obviously unique. However, it opens
the possibilities for preamps. My 88 is getting the VV preamp treatment to
go with the satellites. But now I can use a later preamp should I find one to
go in the 1978 73 and keep it period correct.
#10
Saw this on a Clist ad. What's going on with the additional controls?
Some kind of DIY preamp? Notice the split faceplate. Looks to be
nicely done.

#12
Alright guys I need some guidance.

I'm ready to purchase the preamp for my son's Rhodes so I
can get the whole satellite setup complete. Bought the Rhodes
Master/Slave last December.

So pros/cons. The VV setup which will be about $300 (preamp, knobs
and faceplate) or this original on ebay which has just been rebuilt.
The rail will get discarded.

Ran across this page. Anyone have any knowledge about these?
For $150 each it's cheaper than having and amp rebuilt.

Saw these on a 73 listing on ebay. Are they key return springs?
Are they beneficial? Do they help eliminate hammer bounce?

Buying / Anyone in Phoenix
April 03, 2011, 11:49:39 AM
I want the name rail/preamp/knobs/faceplate/cable off this 73 suitcase
keyboard. You can do what you want with rest. Will put in $150 toward
the $200 purchase. The parts I want would have to be shipped to me
on the east coast.

Can anyone help out?

Back in January I scored a pair of Rhodes Satellites. However, the master
has Rolas installed and the slave has Utahs. This kind of bugged me, although
I'm sure there is no real discernable difference.

I first hooked them up off a BB preamp stompbox and all was fine. The next time
I hooked them up I lost sound from one of the Rolas in the master. I gave the cone
a little flex and felt and heard definite scratching. VOICE COIL shot. A recone/coil
is in order.

Anyway, I'm patiently watching ebay and a pair of auctions come up from the same
seller each with a single Rola from a 1977 suitcase. My Rolas are late '76 and the
Utahs are earlier '77. Same numbers as mine with the small dust cap. Well, I got lucky
and only a couple of people were watching them. Didn't take much to win them. Now
I can swap the bad speaker, get it reconed, then replace the Utahs with a pair of
Rolas to match the master.

I know this is a simple thing but it made my day.

Buying / Shipping cost info
January 21, 2011, 11:55:34 AM
The following is offered for informational purposes only in order to assist those
seeking to purchase a piano and in the need of a shipping service.

When I was considering a set of satellite speakers I signed up with Uship on the
recommendation of another poster. Uship will link your Ebay watched list and
companies will bid to ship the items you're watching. Being flexible on delivery
time helps a lot. Reviews of the bidding companies (or a link to reviews) accompany
the bids.

A set of speakers I considered in CA received a quote of $250 to ship to northern
VA. The company would pick up the speakers and wrap them in packing quilts.
This was for not bad in my opinion since the pair I did buy cost $155 to ship from
Buffalo, NY via UPS.

I had been watching an auction for a 73 with the Satellite System in NC. Uship sent
me an email, here is the text. I think this would be for the piano alone because the
estimated weight is 100 lbs. about 35 lbs. short and I'm sure subject to change.

Looks like I'm going to keep the newly acquired 73. A few keys in the
middle range have colored paint dots on them. They will come off. Looks
like someone did the "Learn piano by colors" method.

The low F key has a full length cigarette burn on it. If I replace that cap
is there a method to color match the creamier color of the other keys?
Will the old "soak it in coffee" trick work?

Any advice is appreciated. I will have to buy an octave set at least so I
will have some to practice with.

The Fender Rhodes Electric Piano / What to do?
January 11, 2011, 05:40:24 PM
So, a customer had come into the shop and saw me working on the 88 for my son
before Christmas. Today he calls and says he has a 1979 73 Stage and asks if I
want it. I told him I really didn't need it and asked how much he wanted. He said
he had a little work he needed done and I could have it and we would worry about
it later.

Well, in the shop it sets. No legs but has cross braces, damper pedal and shaft,
leg bag. Exterior about what you'd expect. Tines, tonebars and pickups look great,
no obvious repairs or re-wiring, shimmed on high side. One key cigarette burn, same
on cheek blocks. Minimum, upper octave hammers will need replacing. Dampers look
great except low E needs to be repositioned.

I really need a 4-pin preamp w/faceplate and knobs to finish my conversion of the 88
to complete the Satellite System since I bought the speakers. I would really like to
trade this out for the preamp. But I would also like to refurb this one and he could
have it at the band practice house. That would take some time though.

What to do?

My son has one on order. Any comments/input from those who have one
or have tried them?

The Fender Rhodes Electric Piano / Mark V retrofit?
January 04, 2011, 07:29:49 PM
Look at this pic. From a current auction. Says MK I ca. 1984. White tape on pickups.

Notice the aluminum rail below the keys. It has a date stamp of 4084 which could be 40th week 1984 or 40th week, 1978, 4th day.

Only the MK V was available in 1984.

A view of the MK V cross section shows an aluminum rail as part of the frame structure running along the keys.

Is this actually a MK V retrofitted in a Stage case with MK I name rail and MK II top?

Opened up the satellites I got this week and noticed the master has Rola built Fender specials and the slave has Utah built. The Rolas (1975) predate the Utahs (1976) by 13 weeks. I figured since the master was available separately they probably built more of them and the set is composed of different production runs. Or the factory just grabbed what was in stock.

This morning I came across an add for an 88 Suitcase with this pic.

The disconnected baffle board is sporting the Utahs, however, the mounted board has what
appear to be Jensen speakers.

I wondering if different sets of speakers were used to obtain certain tonal characteristics.
Or like I said, they just used what was in stock.

I have seen other pics with four matched speakers though.
#26
Hope this is in the right place.

Recently received a pair of satellite speakers. The are a present for my son
so I can't take them home to check them out. Powered them up momentarily.
Lights come on, mild hiss from both speakers on master. Minor hum both speakers
on slave. Figure this is normal and a little cleaning of metal parts it should go
away.

I do want to hear them though. I figured I would grab a guitar and a BB preamp
and jack right into the input on the slave. Need to determine the inputs on
the 4-pin connector for the master though.

Should I use an instrument cable or speaker cable between the preamp and cabs?

The Fender Rhodes Electric Piano / Love the new look
December 28, 2010, 11:54:48 PM
Not new "different" just they look new.

New tolex and hardware. What fun! Did an all nighter getting this done
for my son to have on Christmas. I love a job that goes as planned.

The guys at Vintage Vibe made sure I had the tolex and hardware in time.
Got some other parts too. Speakeasy shipped the logos immediately too.

The jobs not done though. These came in during editing this post and I will probably
be recovering them for his birthday in Feb. Seller was awesome to deal with. Spent
time with me to make sure shipping wasn't outrageous. These were complete with
4-pin cable, power cords and the ground lugs weren't broken off.

What are the differences (if any) in the Fender/Rhodes satellite system
as compared to the Rhodes system. I expect the amps might be different.

I'm asking because I'm going to add the VV vibrato package to the Stage 88
just purchased. With the VV setup do I need the master-slave setup or can
I use two masters if I find them as individuals. This change is down the road
but I'm researching now.

Thanks

Giving my son a stage 88 for Christmas. For now can he run it
through a BB Preamp and SWR Workingman 15? I know it's not
going to make the piano shine but I'm trying to be economically
wise at the time. The SWR has passive and active inputs.

Hello all. Just picked up a 1978 Stage 1 88.

Looks pretty good inside but someone has definitely been in there.

First the info.

1978 Rhodes Stage 1 88
Serial number K732689 (Got a strip of ser# stickers inside)
Build start 3778 (black ink)
Build finish 4885 (48th week 1978 5th day, correct?) black ink
010459TBJ
Gold numbered tonebars
Wood bump on key pedestals, not felt strip
Felt on pedestals
Ink stamped Rhodes label on pickup rail
Ribbed control rail
All legs, braces, pedal and damper bar. No bag
Hammer tips 1-30 short not color coded
                 31-41 red
                 42-51 yellow
                 52-64 tall not color coded
                 65-88 wrapped wood block
Keys and damper pads on 12 block combs, 4 block for 85-88
Tips, felts, bridles al look great.
Harp top is near perfect.
Keys white not yellowed.

Stripping this week to re-tolex and replace hardware.

Only about 13 of the tone bars have oxidation. Does this impact
tone? Can I just buff them?

Replacing the tone bar bushings. Should I just get bushings from
Speakeasy or the complete screw kit from Vintage Vibe?

Pick up wiring has been modded on first few. Can anyone confirm this
wiring config. (From a diagram found online). Found references on this
site but not the actual sequence

1,4,4,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,2,2,2,1,1,1,1

Starts 1-4 wired together at back of pickups, 1-2 then open on the
keyboard side of the pickup.

Current configuration is odd compared to my research.
1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,2,2,2,1,1,1,1

Thanks
