Fred,

i believe "quadrapuss" is chris's nick.  fred typically posts under his own name.  ;)

One thing that some models had was a ground cable from the RCA to the aluminium damper bar. Lifting the harp away from that probably counteracted the effect.

Try to connect a wire from the RCA ground to the damper bar to see if it solves the issue.

mine has this.  when i first bought it, the ground wire had fallen loose.  for a while, i wondered why the volume was so low even when i cranked my amp.  i also had serious hiss and hum.  after asking some question on the old site, i finally reattached the ground cable to the damper and presto!  the volume level instantly increased, the hum went away, and the hiss is now minimal (if not inaudible).

The Fender Rhodes Electric Piano / Re: Date code question
February 10, 2011, 11:55:22 AM
maybe the last 4 digits are the date stamp of a major service upgrade it received.  maybe if you ask him about any service that might have been performed on it, it might jog his memory.  just a guess, though...

i added the miracle mod on my stage a few years ago, and it made a world of difference.  much easier on the fingers (glissandos in particular used to be painful).  really cut down significantly on double striking as well.  just an overall "lighter" feel - ideal for someone like me who has a light touch but wants that aggression during louder sections and solos.

i used to do session work for grandmaster flash.  he had a d-550 (the rack module d-50) in his rig.  we cut a ton of tracks, most of which he released through his overseas distributor.  i haven't worked for him in a while, but knowing him, i'm sure he still has and uses it.

Wow. Incredible. How did you set up the drums, bass, and strings to play behind you? Did you just EQ the Rhodes out of the mix somehow?

rhodes is still in the mix.  he just played over top of it...

hi.  i'm nowhere near as much of an "expert" as some of the other folks here, but i'll do my best:

1. the flatness of the old grommets is a good indication that they need to be replaced.  the vintage vibe grommets look how your old ones used to (presumably), and replacing them should improve the sound of your tines/tonebars nicely.

2. if you feel more comfortable reusing the old screws with the new grommets, there aren't too many reasons why that wouldn't work.  in fact, that is precisely what i did when i ordered new grommets for my piano a few years back.  however, i would trust vintage vibe.  they've restored many pianos, and the items they sell are top-notch, imo.

3. none of the spring washers in my piano are doubled, and it plays beautifully.  i would say this is not essential, but the best way to find out is to do a test with both standard springs and the doubled ones.  see which yields best results.

hope that helps...

depends.  anything wrong with the pro-one?  i like those synths, but i don't know what the current condition of yours is.

well done, my friend...

frank mccomb told me personally that the mark v was the only rhodes he used on his "love stories" album.  it's on i-tunes or you can purchase copies from frank's website:

damn!  my fender rhodes has a red "buzz watson" stamp on it too.  i always wondered who it was but never looked into it.  cool to learn some history...

thanks for replying, everyone.  :)

hi all!  hope everyone is doing well... :)

i've recently recorded a tune, and after mixing, i've noticed something.  it appears as though the stereo ping pong on my rhodes track has become less prominent.  i am assuming this is due to compression (too much, perhaps?), but i'm not sure.

has this happened to anyone here?  if so, what steps would you suggest i take to avoid losing the effect on future mixes?

p.s. - before anyone asks, yes - i did track the rhodes in stereo.
#32
at first glance, i thought it might be fredro peña.  at second glance, i checked the prescription on my old man glasses...

ordered them from vintage vibe a few months back.  paid standard shipping and got them the next day (although they aren't that far from me).

hi all!  long time since i last posted.  hope everyone is doing well.  :)

i'm working on a recording at the moment.  i laid down the rhodes track last night, and overall, i'm quite pleased with it.  however, in one or two spots it sounds a little distorted (unintentionally).  i've heard a few people over the years insist that a little distortion is not a bad thing and in some cases even desirable with electric pianos.  i'm happy with the performance and would prefer not to recut it.  once i flesh it out a bit, i'll do a rough mix and post it, but for now, i wouldn't mind hearing some general opinions on this matter.

if you hear a little bit (but not an excessive amount) of distortion on a rhodes, are your ears offended by it?

buy the new frank mccomb live dvd/cd set.  some great rhodes playing on every track.  go to the link below to link to the purchase page.  also listen to the player on the homepage for samples.  first track is "do you remember love" in which frank begins on wurly, then switches to rhodes to play an epic solo.

i've been a prince fan for years and obviously a rhodes enthusiast for many more years.  prince started playing the plexi-rhodes in 2001 or 2002.  harold rhodes jr. built it personally, and prince sent his "people" to pick it up when it was finished.  harold never got any feedback from prince, but since it's been in either his or renato neto's rig ever since, harold assumed that prince approved of it.

personally, after hearing it quite a number of times, i don't really find the sound of it too desirable.  not exactly a bad sound; just not very "woody" for reason i hope are obvious.

i'm fine with mine too, chris.  my rhodes is from early '72 so i don't have the problem you described.

happy new year!  :)

interesting bit of trivia: the rmi with serial number 001 was given to stevie wonder.  it can be heard on "look around" from his where i'm coming from album.

serial number 002 was purchased by bernie worrell and can be heard on the title track of free your mind and your ass will follow by funkadelic as well as a few other tracks.

bernie told me all of this himself, btw.

damn nice one too!  :D

i have an older version, and i have nothing but positive things to say about it.  the presets are all great.  truth be told, i have not used on my rhodes tracks much, but the few times i used the "piano" preset, it yielded great results.  crisp and clean, you'll be happy to know.  enjoy!

Quote from: "jim"and i would definately make holes in the cheek blocks before i'd make holes in the harp....i'm not sure if I got confused somewhere, are we talking about making holes in harps?

no, we're talking about making holes in cheek blocks...at least we were until some alternatives were suggested that thankfully are feasible for me and my stage.

Quote from: "jim"do you know how to set strikeline swang? have you experienced the joy of a correct strikeline?

yes and yes.

thanks for all the help.  i don't have to drill yet, as i have a few empty slot holes in my harp.  those should last me a while.

Quote from: "bjammerz"Well first things first - remove harp and see if the hammers are getting hung up on the tines.  If so that means you probably have to move your harp around a bit.

is there a way to permanently prevent this from happening?  do you recommend filling the harp screw holes, repositioning the harp a bit and then drilling new holes for the screws, or is this a bad idea?

Quote from: "Carol Rhodes-Rice"Yes Swang, my brothers built that plexi Rhodes for Prince. Pretty interesting project really.  I won't go into the gory details. I still haven't seen him play the thing on TV or anywhere. Have you?

not on tv, but live in concert many times.  his current keyboardist, renato neto, now plays it.
