Hi guys,

This is a video from the graduation in Jazz Drums of a friend, me playing my '79 mk1 suitcase.

I posted that video of Herbie with Josh Groban on the Rhodes artists subforum, but saw later that they are not playing live... :(
Anyway, nice groove by Herbie.

Hi Rob,

English is not my first language. "A little bit may rub off on you..." means that I'm imitating someone? If yes, I don't know who... ( ;D).

The strings came from Gforce minimonsta with a little tweaking.

Where is the susb9 chord you spoke about?

Everyone who knows where this phrase as come from, gets a free listen at soundcloud ;).

Hope you enjoy.

Hi,

I have a MK1 1979 Suitcase.
It is very quiet if the effects are not connected via the inserts (except when I play, of course).
When the pedals are connected, a lot of hiss starts. I tried changing to batteries, unplug any charger or light, and the hiss continues, even when the pedals are in bypass mode. The cables are in good condition and are of nice quality.
Any sugestions?

Thanks

Hi, thanks for the comment.
No, the bass line is only done by a VST. Yesterday I uploaded the wrong MP3, so please check again.

Finally recorded my clavinet. I've been playing with Ableton too, and some VST. Hope you like it.

The damping in my suitcase was solved by simply unscrewing the top of the pedal pushroad, letting it go higher.
#23
Thanks for your replys.

Rob, yes, Herbie did that but I think he had a mixer on top of the Clavinet, as all the videos show it. There is a part in the Hempstead concert that you hear that the Clavinet and the Rhodes are with the same wah too (on Sly, 3:39).

Jean, I took some time to realize that too:) (My zoom 505 is stereo too).

But what I was asking was for a budget solution, because I don't have money to buy the mixer yet, and I'm afraid that I'll damage the pedal or some of the instruments, since I'm a electronics noob.

Hi people,

Since I ain't got a mixer, can I connect both the Rhodes and the Clavinet with a duplicator like the one in the image on the instrument in from the Wah pedal, and back to the suitcase amplifier? (Via accessory jacks)

I already tried it. As long as the Clavinet has some volume, the Rhodes plays, and wah is on both, and vibrato too, but I want to know if this overloads something on the preamp or amp.

Thanks

That's the one ;)

I posted this in the general forum, because I think this concert is historic for the Rhodes Piano, and not everyone knows it. If any moderator thinks that this post isn't correctly placed, please feel free to change it to another subforum.
In this concert, the HeadHunters are in a Trio, without Bill Summers, and even Bennie Maupin only solos sometimes and he doesn't play on heads. Hope you enjoy:

In mine, the treble section is closer to the pickups as it can get, right before the "overdrive" tone:

Check this, too (The two aligned screws on the back end of the tine, keys side)

Thanks, Kenneth.

It looks the day it came from the factory, congratulations :).  That Rhodes is from a nice year ;), you can hear something I recorded with mine (same year and model as yours) here:

I want to hear yours, post some clips!
#32
Yes, you're right, but the articulation and phrasing are from Herbie;)
#34
Nice sound you got there;)

Hi, welcome to the board.

I experienced this a while back on my suitcase. Check both your amplifiers (circuit boards) side by side and see if there is some unsimilarity. On my case it was a different resistor in one of them.

Hope it helped

A distortion pedal with some reverb and some adjustments should do it

No replies doesn't mean no interest...

I love their album "Simple Things", by the way, and Rhodes is there too.

Already left a comment there, thanks for the 4ths voicing ;). Herbie uses one very similar to that on another record, but the lowest note only goes up half step, while the others go up a whole step, can't remember what song.

Hi Carver,

Thanks for the reply on my topic.

I started to work with music software 2 weeks ago, borrowed a MIDI keyboard from a friend, and I'm in love with a Moog VST (Minimonsta, not the real thing, of course, but very, very good). Loved your video, your Rhodes tone reminds me a bit of Jamiroquai and Bob James, very nice. What's your recording setup?
#44
Hello,

Thanks for the kind words.

I recorded it directly from the Janus Outputs on the suitcase, and used a CryBaby Wah on treble position and a Zoom 505 pedal with a little reverb connected to the effects loop inserts, on the preamp.
Treble was on 2 (it goes from -5 to +5) and Bass on 4.

M-Audio Fasttrack Pro to convert it from analog to digital ( I used the two front inputs for stereo), and cooledit pro 2.1.

The most important things for this tone were, of course, tine adjustment, but most suprisingly for me, the pedals. I had it recorded some time ago without them, and they brought some major improvement.

Hope this helped.

Please tell me what you think about the sound. I'm after "the Herbie sound", and I think I'm close.
I'll give details about the setup later, if you want.

Forgot about the Janus system for stage models... But the MkII preamp on a MkI looks strange
