time to breathe some new life into this topic...

How I record depends on the sound I want (duh!) but the 2 main options:

DI : AMS Neve 8801 Channelstrip. Hey, you get the Neve pre-amp! Plus the EQ/Dynamics sections are killer.

MIC: I have a '69 Fender Princeton that I'm mic'ing with a Telefunken USA M16 (MK2) atm. Other choices are SM57 or Neumann U87...But I'm considering getting a stereo pair of 414s, after reading what Jim Williams wrote on the GS-forum, regarding some amp/recording techniques:

QuoteConsider replacing the 50 watt Bassman 12" speakers in the studio bottom. We are using the Eminence Beta 12's with the whizzer cone for a smooth response (no peaking high notes that rip your head off) and a 10 k hz frequency range to allow the hf harmonics to be heard. They are rated at 97 db SPL and 250 watts each. Otherwise, it's the usual bass full cut, treble full boost which is combined with the 4k hz rolloff of the bassman speaker. That creates some nasty peaking high notes at the roll-off point of the speakers. (2.5 to 3k is hyped on these speakers).
Many high end acts did record off the harp back in the 70's and 80's, I know I did.
I set up a couple of 70's twin reverbs with JBL E-120 speakers for Stevie Wonder, you can hear that on several releases from the 80's. A 414 on each in stereo was the technique used. He also recorded some vocal tracks at the same time (yes, he can do that) with another 414.

I've never been a great fan of AKG mics, but the 414 is very flat and accurate. It might just be the answer ;)

2 speakers don't give you more bass response, it gives you more bass power.
.
The frequency response is what it is, you can't just put another speaker next to it and say...now we have a better response! You're just adding power.
.
So if you're looking for higher output level, go for 2 x 12"...if you're doing studio recordings I would pick the Deluxe Reverb. You're never gonna play the Twin on 6, 7 or 8 at home.

I got mine this week, and I'm starting restoration this weekend....I'll post some but it won't be until a couple weeks from now.

hm....that sounds like the complete opposite of my experience...maybe they don't like the Dutch...  :(

hmm....well i placed the order almost three weeks ago. I understand the Stage Vibe is a custom item and takes time to make, but three weeks?!
Other than that they just don't communicate! That annoys me, because all you have to do is respond to a simple question. Than I know what's up, but now I have no clue. All they said, 2 weeks ago(15th), was that it should all be ready to be shipped..last week monday(19th). Still no email or notice since then..so what should I do?
#61
ok so maybe not.....still waiting

Can anybody tell me what the deal is with VV? They're not responding to emails and it's taking too long imo.

I should get mine next week    8)

I record more than I gig, so I wanted to have more than 1 option available when picking a sound and/or recording technique for my Rhodes. Plus I'm a GearSlut, so anything with knobs and buttons gets my juices flowing!

I have a Neve 8801 channelstrip that actually sounds fantastic when I plug my piano through its DI.
The Princeton Amp is a gem, and I guess the Stage Vibe will add some extra juice to the collection.

ot:
I use the Fender Super Reverb impuls response in Altiverb 6 if I want reverb. If any of you haven't heard it yet....you should!

It's a cliche, but trust your ears.

I was at a guy yesterday who imports vintage Fender Black- and Silverfaces from the US to Holland. They fix them up all they way, keeping them as original as possible. They haven't been doing it long, so they're still trying to make a name, but I was very very impressed with what he had and their service.

I listened to 4 amps:
2 Princeton Amps (1969 silverface and 1966 blackface)
1 Twin Reverb (1971 modded blackface)
1 Deluxe Amp (1965, no reissue...goes w/o saying)

After 2 hours of listening and A/B'ing, I went for the 69 Silverface Princeton amp.
The Twin fell off first...it's just too friggin' loud, and I need a studio amp.
Then the Blackface Princeton had to go. It just didn't hold up next to the Silverface and Deluxe.

So the battle was between a 69 Silverface Princeton and the 65 Blackface Deluxe.
The Princeton had a "new" Jensen speaker and had a more overall 'clean' sound, even at 10. The mid-low was beautiful and had a very solid impact.
The Deluxe was absolutely gorgeous and playing at 10 it gave you a slight edge, which, I can imagine, guitar players are dying for.

I didn't get a Twin, because it's just useless when playing/recording in the studio imo. The Deluxe was beautiful and I wanted it, but it was almost €1000 more than the Princeton, which also had a beautifully warm and clean character. Plus, I would probably never play the Deluxe at 10....so there you go. A '69 Fender Princeton Silverface. With a Jensen speaker and RCA and Telefunken tubes.

Great pics!

I finally got my baby after years of thinking about it and months of searching. Pics wil follow in a couple of weeks.

OT:
1ThingI have to express about a lot of the pics...your (home) studios are all horribly treated for accoustics!!
You guys spent so much time on your goodies you forget the space you play in!!!
.

carry on..
