Wurly 200 & FreeWurli
« on: March 19, 2020, 07:46:25 AM »
Hello,

For 2 months I'm happy owner of Wurlitzer 200. Piano is in great shape, with perfect mechanics etc. Amp is the only problem - there's lots of hiss and little bit of hum. Therefore I have 2 questions to more experienced forum members:

1 (HUM). My Wurly has european transformer (220/240V). I've seen cable twisting tutorials for US transformers, but couldn't find any info about 4 cable european versions. Any tips?

2 (HISS). I'm torn between rebuilding original amp or installing completely new electronics. At the moment I can't spend cash on such replacements as Warneck, but I do have some practical electronic skills. I see two options: refurbish original amp/psu from late sixties or assemble new one using FreeWurli pcb's (http://www.kerschhofer.net/wurlitzer-replacement-amp/).

I'm reluctant to modify original amp - there's risk I'll just lose it's originality with no satisfactory improvement. On the other hand there are no opinions about FreeWurli's sound on the net. As you could guess I'm into classic Wurlitzer sound, don't want to loose it in the process.

Any opinions to help me make my mind?

Cheers

Okay, I'll put it shorter: any experiences with FreeWurli? ;)
