SOOOOO....

How does one go about shipping a rhodes? It looks like I will be moving from CT to Oakland, CA.

Any thoughts on Amtrak? Any thoughts on CHEAPNESS?????

I'm hoping to ship it with a variety of other items.

If it helps... I have a seventy three suitcase model, without the bottom half.  Anyone know off hand what this thing weighs?

Thanks a bunch

When I bought my rhodes it was shipped to me by UPS and they ended up breaking a few things so don't use them. As for the my '77 73suitcase top weighed about 125lbs. Hope this helps.

Have you considered looking into specialist musical instrument carriers? It will probably cost more but why take the risk with UPS etc? All these companies use conveyors etc and literally just chuck stuff on them. Even if your Rhodes was flight-cased, just think what all those shock waves do to the inside of your Rhodes!

Maybe you could approach a piano dealer near your current address and ask about paying them to ship your piano to either your new address or another piano dealer near your new address. Hopefully they will treat your Rhodes like they treat the grands they ship.

It is cheaper to use a piano removal firm. Plus they usually charge based on how many flights of stairs they have to go up and down. You should be able to bring the Rhodes to street level for collection and have it delivered to street level at the other end. This will keep the costs down - I know a very good firm in the UK but that's no good to you...

DO NOT USE UPS!

I think its misleading to call the rhodes case a 'flight case'... It is still very fragile and IF you have to ship it, rather than use a specialist firm, read this first: http://www.fenderrhodes.com/cgi-bin/faq-display?id=1

Good luck!

I wasn't referring to the Rhodes case as a flightcase, I was referring to an additional flight case in the true sense. I know people that use them and, although they might prevent the Rhodes from being smashed, they don't stop the hammers, keys etc from jabbing away at those tines like Les Dawson while in transit :-)
