Mixing other instruments into the Rhodes preamp? [PICS]

Okay...Let's say I stick a mixer on top of my rhodes and run my fancy Elka 610 and my Rhodes RCA into the mixer then into the gray RCA jack of the 1972 4-pin preamp....Magic or folly?

Should I even consider this or am I being retarded?  Could I potentially destroy the preamp/amp/speakers/world with this activity?

I'd love to run the Elka (or other instruments) through the suitcase with vibrado and easy volume control.

My $29 Elka:

My $400 Rhodes:

Thanks!

Hey! nice ELKA Rhapsody 610, i've got one last year for about 60$Can, but mine was black and gray!
Nice string sound, but the piano sound......

Heres one of the only Pics i got of this:

My Elka story is a good one...the Rhodes, not so good.

I got the thing at a junk sale.  I was looking around, and thought, 'hummm, empty keyboard case...'  I opened the case and was shocked to see the old relic in such good condition.  Guy was asking $40, but I only had $29 in cash...

That night I looked on eBay and there was an Elka stand with rough measurements.  I checked it out and it looked right.  I won the bid for $0.50 and paid almost $20 in shipping.

A few weeks later I finally discovered what type of volume pedal the Elka used and found one online at a computer geek store for $9.99 (+$8.00 shipping)

It arrived yesterday and works perfectly.  All told I'm into it $65.  Not bad...but the F#'s go out after about 5 minutes.  I'm sure it's a heat related, easy fix but I'm not sure where to start.  I'd guess it's the little diode that regulates the tuning since all the F#'s are routed to it.  Any tips?

BTW, nice setup!

Nice Story, but mine i've got the expression pedal with for 60$ but i sell it for about 150$ since 6 months, but this week end, i found a real nice Synth for 350$, a Yamaha CS-40M (1981) it works perfectly, and the sounds are just amazing!!

Nice find!  Great setup too!

Anyone care to answer my original question?  Will I damage the preamp by mixing other instruments into it?  How about effects?  I think I read about someone putting a phaser and even distortion before the preamp...is that right?

HammondToby

It depends on the signal, you give into the preamp.

The signal, the Rhodes feeds into it's own preamp is as week as the signal of an electric guitar. If you add some guitareffectboxes, you don't change the strength of the signal in general. I don't know, what happens, if give a linesignal into the preamp, but I doubt, that it will be good for your Rhodes.

Since we are having some story time I found my Hammond M3 in the back of a good will for 20 bucks someone had dropped it off and no one there could get it into the shop it being so heavy so they sold it to me for twenty bucks. It sounds and works great the only thing that is missing is the music stand.  I also have a Yamaha CP-70 and a Kustom 88 which I hope to replace it with a real rhode soon.

Quote from: "SchroderMusic"they sold it to me for twenty bucks

Stories like these make my cry.

Maybe I could interest you in selling your hammond? I'll give you 10 times more than you payed for it? :)

Sorry, Pale, it is definitly a keeper I just found a Leslie that won't cost me more then 100 bucks.  So I think the Chromatic gods really want me to have a great hammond set up because I can't think of any other reason way I would get so lucky.  But I haven't been so lucky in the Rhodes scene.
