Hi all,

I'm wanting to rebulid the woodwork, a new case for the my stage 73. What would be the best material to choose and if not wood, is there a synthetic that could do just a good job.

Balsa ? ? ? So you can bring the weight of the case to 1 kg...But with big stability problems...

My case was in very bad conditions (Case from 1972). This week, i took all the internals out, and i have only a naked case. This old case will be good wood to warm up this winter...

I found a "new" case, from a Rhodes (1978) in much better shape for 50$. Only the tolex is not so good. So i will take it away and give all the case a new paintjob. First, make the surface of the wood ultra clean and flat, then a first grounding, 2 - 3 layers of colour lack (Dark Lila-Blue) and last but not least a DD Lack (2 components clear lack), and polish, polish...until the surface is allmost like a piano.

Thats it.

Would you like to have your future case transparent ? I mean where you can see the wood ? So you have to take a classic wood like mapple, birch.  I don't know if Tek, Okume or Wenge would be the right choice...It would be twice as heavy than before, but not more.
The ultimate version would be carbon fiber. Immagine a case, ultra strong and incredibly light...Only carbon fiber make it possible. But allmost impossible to realize until you have the specific gear and experience.

The cheap alternative, cheap wood from OBI and a brand new tolex.

Talking of transparent, you could always build a new case out of clear perspex. Prince has a Rhodes like this I believe.

:D  LOL  :D

well, I have the Live at the alladin DVD and I like it a lot but I can understand you when using the term "gay".
A friend of mine owns an old upright piano which he pimped a lilttle bit. He replaced the front board (above the keys) with a fibreglas board, so that you can look at your hammer hitting the strings. that is - for me - as fasinating as a whirling leslie horn.

Sorry for OT but I couldnt resist.

I like the idea of building a bottom part of the case with high quality wood and just oil or give it some protection layer instead of that tolex. especially when U dont haul it around for gigging.

You know, that's all great and everything about prince's rhodes and paint jobs, but what kind of wood is the rhodes case! I've got a carpenter all lined up to do the deed, all I need is to know what wood is it.

I can't tell birch from mertle from hoop pine from termite infested oak!
