The Youtube Rhodes thread
« on: February 03, 2007, 09:58:10 PM »
I figured the forum was needing this thread..... and I might as well start it.

This is the place to post your favourite links of  rhodes footage from youtube- particularly if it features some the great rhodes artists we all love.

Here's a starter (and can it be better than Herbie anyway? so far i've not tracked any stevie footage).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXurhDMrdzs&mode=related&search=

(rhodes solo starts 4mins in)

Bonus supersite geek points if you can identify the model and effects used in any clip, naturally....

have fun!

Here's my first Youtube tryout:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoGHVte7fic

It's a bit soft and the timing isn't great, but it was more a technical test anyway :-)

James, if you're reading this, there's a phpBB mod that allows for Youtube videos to be embedded into topics directly. Might be fun to implement here. Here's more info: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=375183

I like the sound of your Rhodes! What phaser are you using? Nice chords :) The clip is too short though, I woul like to hear a bit more.

Here's a clip I recorded a few weeks ago, the video is of bad quality since I used my mobile phone to record it, but it is what it is.

Hey goldphinga,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xdk8-nF_KGs  <-- AWESOME!

Always great to see 'ridiculously virtuoso' Rhodes playing like that. I especially like the two-handed riffs you pull off. Did you have have to time stretch Hanc**k and/or Duke solos in order to reverse engineer those? :-)

Looking forward to checking out your album!

Pale! Oh, yesss! Your playing (imro in D-minor) is exactly what i like! I've just listened to your recording 10 times or more. What amp do you use?  Haha, may be a mobile phone sometimes can be proper sound processor. Well, Mark II really can sound perfect. Sorry i'm not registered on youtube and couldnt leave my completely positive comments there.

Does anybody have Mark V recordings?

I'm glad you liked it, thank you very much :). Positive feedback motivates me to record something else ( and maybe put a little more effort to record something more  than just impro-jamming clip ).

Believe it or not, there is no amp, at least not a guitar/bass/keyboard amp present. I'm way playing through my "house rig", which consist of a 1985-1984, Grundig home HI-FI system. I just plugged in my Mark II and cranked up the amp all they way ( cos otherwise the rhodes is to quiet ). And it really sounds good ( live, not over mobile phone :) so I play through it when I'm at home. At gigs I use 100W KMD hybrid head and Marshall 212 box,or a 50W tube Vox, or a small Carvin 15W tube amp,  ( depends on what kind of gig I have ).

James, I failed to find what part of that video had anything to do with a Rhodes.  Especially in the light of Virginia Tech, do I need to watch another angry kid trying to kill people in a video game?  I'd much rather watch him banging on an electric piano!  Paul

i would suggest to return to electropiano Music by the following clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_jsMPiTaqE

as far as i know Vangelis considered Rhodes to be one of the most expressive keyboards ever along with his favorites Yamaha CS80 and Yamaha CP70 which he plays in the clip (if i'm not mistaken)

it would be interesting to see the same approach for combining lovely Rhodes "chimes" and growl with synth or string machine lines or pads and played simultaneously. I dream one day i will have similar experience with my Rhodes Mark 1 still traveling to me from ebay. I think Vangelis way (such a symphony combination of different sounds in real time) has additional boost for musical creativity, and probably the clip is usefull for any Rhodes player.

Respectfully yours.

Great to see some Dutch hero's from back in the day !!!
The guitarist ( Jan Akkerman) still performs and makes use of Rhodes in his band. Rob Coops did the tech work on these Rhodes piano's for the player in Jan Akkermans band.

This one is not bad also, Chick soloing on his Mk V. Notice the uneven level of his keys in the close ups around 0:50 and 2:05 ( is it really that important to have your keys perfectly levelled ?)

You aren't the only one.

The original concept of Dyno-My-Piano was great.  A nearly perfectly tuned, tweaked, and toned Rhodes with sustain for days, smooth action, and so forth.  In other words, how the Rhodes was supposed to come off the assembly line, but of course never did since you can't take the time in mass production to get everything just perfect.

However, I do NOT like the overly bright tone many Dyno Rhodes players choose on the preamp.  The thing I love about the Rhodes is that mid-range throaty growl behind that initial strike.  It's such a WARM sound.  The bright sound that many Dyno Rhodes owners go with is the exact opposite.
Proud owner,

This is my favourite Rhodes you tube clip:

Also found this one today, some guy playing a rhodes outside on the street, it's a real battered rhodes from the looks of it but it sounds nice...

Yesterday some new footage of Les McCann was added on YouTube.

I've never heard of him, but it are high quality recordings
so you should check them out.

Very nice Rhodes sound from a Mark 1 suitcase with a flat top...:   *CLICK*

Thanks so much for sharing this. Great, tasteful playing from everyone on this tune.

Note that the flat top has the logo on the right side -- this is the rare flat top made specifically for the Mark 1 Suitcase, not a flat top from a Mark 2 (without the logo).

Note also how his treble slider is set all the way to the right (high). Installing the "bright kit" tweeters genuinely addresses that issue.

But nice video, and great acoustics in the hall. Thanks again.

I'm glad to hear I've made someone very happy

But you're right, it is a nice band and they all play very good. However I'm not blown away bij McCann's playing.

I must say I haven't heard of any mark 1 suitcases made with a flat top... but well, i'm not the expert here

No, he's clearly not the straightahead jazz soloist the others are, but, then, that's never been his identity, and at the beginning of the concert (the Cold Duck clip) he graciously acknowledges the other musicians' proficiency.

I must say I haven't heard of any mark 1 suitcases made with a flat top... but well, i'm not the expert here

There's nothing different about the sound; it's just a normal silverface-slider Mark 1 Suitcase with a different harp cover.
