Hello, I am Carol Rhodes-Rice.  I am Harold Rhodes' daughter.  I am so grateful that my dad's work and love of piano has lived on on this site.  I just want to know if anyone has an amazing Rhodes Riff that I can use as a ringtone for my cell phone.  It is one of those unique things that differentiate us Rhodes sound lovers from any others.

Thanks!
I am the eldest daughter of Harold Burroughs Rhodes, Inventor of the Rhodes Piano.  He was a humble, honorable man.

great to hear from the family!

what type of cellphone do you have?  some phones allow certain types of files, others are very brand-specific and don't allow much short of midi-type tones.

Hi, welcome to the forum. Great to have real family joining the family !
Unfortunately I don't have the means to record my Rhodes and put it on the web, but I'm sure there will be more than enough people here that can help you to get you a killer Rhodes riff for your phone.
Writing this, a question pops up, just curiosity...
Do you or any of your relatives own Rhodes piano's ? (sisters, cousins, uncles and so on)

Looking forward to read your posts in the future.

Kind regards from the other side of the pool.

Carol Rhodes-Rice

Hello,

Thanks for all of your well-wishes.  Yes, each us kids have a Rhodes of some type or another.  Mine is a home model Rhodes in a wood cabinet.  My oldest brother, Dave, also has a home model and my younger brother, Harold,  has several stage types.  My brothers build Rhodes pianos from misc. Rhodes parts on occasion when they get requests from celebs.

My cell phone is a Verizon LG VX8700.

I downloaded some ringtone creator software and made a ringtone from the beginning of Riders on the Storm.  It's beautiful, but it's just so quiet I can hardly hear it when it plays.

I'll try to recall some good stories when I get a moment.  My hubby and I are currently cleaning out the barn getting ready for puppies.  We raise Great Pyrenees dogs and our sweet little Ruthie is in a family way.  The dad is our huge 175lb male named Elijah.  Check out our website if interested at:

Hi Carol,

Love those gentle giants. The owner of a shop where I worked during weekends and holidays about 12 years ago had two Great Pyrenees. Lovely dogs! Great pics on your site. Good luck with the puppies !

Any chance of recovering a rare Rhodes gem whilst cleaning out the barn ?
Or a forgotten cardboard box filled with hundreds of Raymac tines ?

About those celebs your brothers assemble piano's for, anybody we might know ?

Yes Swang, my brothers built that plexi Rhodes for Prince. Pretty interesting project really.  I won't go into the gory details. I still haven't seen him play the thing on TV or anywhere. Have you?

But I believe my brothers also got a call from Ray Manzerek. He wanted a custom built Rhodes. Not sure if they did it or not.  I think it was right around the time we were sued to prevent us from going into the piano business.  Anyway, water under the bridge.

Great Pyrenees are absolutely gentle giants Kitchen.  Our male, Elijah, is such a sweet dog. When I feed them raw chicken he takes his piece so gently from my hands you would think it was an animal he was protecting.

Forgot to tell you Kitchen, yes, when we moved my dad out of his home in Fullerton Hills, we found a shed full of Rhodes parts including tines. My brother Dave would know more. I'll ask him.

Dave built my Rhodes home model from some of the stuff he found in the shed.

Pretty cool, huh?

All I can say is..WOW! And thank you for joining this group,Carol!

I built a piano bass out of a basket case 73 key-any chance that shed full of parts has empty cases and tops for piano basses? I would love to hear some of your brother's stories-any chance of them joining our group?

Wow, I didn't realize he tried to shut down this site BJT3.  I'm sure it's the same dude.  I'm glad he failed though.

There is so much that nobody knows about that whole situation.  It would really make all Rhodes lovers angry to know what he did to my 89 year old dad.  My comfort is in knowing there is one judge that he will have to answer to ultimately.  I don't think God allows lawyer mouthpieces however.

I'll ask Dave about what he might still have in the way of parts.  He's a successful landscape architect in Sacramento now, so he may have given all that stuff to my younger half-brother, Harold.

I have a poster called "Rhodes Scholars Speak Out" that has Joe Zawinul's picture and a nice comment about how much he likes his Rhodes Piano.  I might be mistaken but I believe he was at the Grammy award presentation they had for my dad way back in 1990 something. It was held at his Rehab Cebter because he was too sick to travel anywhere.  It was so much fun having all these piano guys come and tell us stories about my dad's humility and generosity.

Carol,

your phone can read the ringtone formats MIDI,MP3,WMA
of which mp3 and wma are recommended, since they play an actual recording.
if you have a sound file that you like, you can edit it, cut it, beef it up to make it louder, etc. If you don't want to bother with all that technical stuff, you can also send it to me, and I can make you a nice ringtone.
Other than, I can record a riff quickly and make a ringtone out of it, if you just want something jazzy/funky.

Peter

Glad you liked the samples. I've really enjoyed that site too. I especially like the videos. I can't take credit for the site though. That would go to Poster "funkkybebel". We don't talk on here too much about the trouble in the past for fear of starting more problems. i'm sure your right about the anger though. I'm sure there's plenty of us here that could put those parts to good use if your brother wanted to part with them. Welp, bye for now,

Thanks Peter and Ben.  Ben you are right, some things are best left in the past.

I've been trying to think of all the great rock songs that have a Rhodes solo I like.  I'm a 60's kid, raised on Rock & Roll, so that's my first love.  I do like Jazz too though.  I know most Rhodes players will cringe because the Rhodes is synonymous with jazz.  But there are quite a few rock songs that feature a Rhodes that warm my heart.  I have some software that can create ringtones, but I'm not sure how to make it louder.

I was sorting through some closets bringing out the winter jackets and found my old "Rhodes Keyboard Instruments USA" satin baseball jacket.  I had forgotten I had it.  Wow talk about going back in time...

Carol

keysandslots

I'm sitting here trying to think of some rock Rhodes players and as usual when you want to remember something, I'm coming up a bit short.  I'm sure Michael McDonald used a Rhodes on lots of Doobie Bros songs (Minute by Minute comes to mind) and I'd bet Donald Fagen used a Rhodes on some Steely Dan stuff.  I think Billy Joel also used a Rhodes on some songs.

Given some time, I'm sure I could come up with more.  As mentioned in other places, Joe Zawinul (one of my favourite keyboard players) used his Rhodes quite a bit, and alot of the Weather Report riffs are closer to a rock/funk style than to a jazz style.

Just to get a bit uselessly off topic for a sec, my mom always wanted to buy me one of those home organs, but when I was 16, I convinced her to buy a Rhodes instead.  I was classically trained, so I wanted 88 keys, and I was starting in my first rock band so in 1974 she bought a Stage Rhodes for me.  Other than some lube and some tuning, it has had no other service or replacements and no fancy pre-amps or processing, and continues to play well and sound great.  What is most amazing, is that when I tell the younger (teens and twenties) musicians around me that I have an 88 Rhodes at home, they are actually envious.

Your dad did a great job!

Randy

p.s.  You gotta post of photo of that baseball jacket!

you can use audio editing software to make your files louder, before you feed them through your ringtone software.

All too true.

Quite a few songs from the Michael McDonald era Doobie Brothers, and Michael McDonald solo, have a Rhodes in it.  Minute By Minute, You're Made That Way, and You Belong To Me (and McDonald solo song I Keep Forgettin')all have prominent Rhodes, and It Keeps You Runnin' has a Rhodes solo at the end.

Billy Joel recorded several songs with a Rhodes:  James, Just The Way You Are, and Rosalinda's Eyes all have prominent Rhodes.

Donald Fagen LOVES using a Rhodes piano in his music (he owns four or five custom suitcase models and always tours with a Mark I suitcase 88 Rhodes with the flat top from a Mark II so he can set sheet music and a Coke on top of his piano).  The Steely Dan albums The Royal Scam, Aja, Gaucho, Two Against Nature, and Everything Must Go all use tons of Rhodes, as well as the three Donald Fagen solo albums The Nightfly, Kamakiriad, and Morph The Cat.  For a great Rhodes solo in a Steely Dan song, check out Black Cow (Victor Feldman is on the Rhodes in that song, great playing!)

Hey, welcome to the forums!  Can't deny that it's a real honor to have one of the Rhodeses post here! :D

Echoing off of Dan's post, another great Rhodes band has to be the 1970s 3 + 3 rock/R&B lineup of the Isley Brothers, often built around Chris Jasper's great keyboard licks.  Their version of Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me" blows the original out of the water IMO...but that's far from their only great Rhodes track, others include the epic ballad "For The Love Of You," the sensual and smooth "Make Me Say It Again Girl", and the wah-pedal excursions of such funky tunes as "Tell Me When You Need It Again."  It think also makes a subtle appearance in such radio classics as "Voyage to Atlantis" and "Footsteps in the Dark," where it serves as backing to Ernie Isley's guitar lines.  "At Your Best You Are Love" is more known through the Aaliyah cover version from '95, which takes its arrangement cues from the original.

The Bee Gees' "disco" era (which wasn't entirely about disco at all) had a lineup involving a rather underrated keyboardist in Blue Weaver, whose lines in "How Deep is Your Love" pretty much made that song everything it was.  The funky intro to "You Stepped Into My Life" really plays well with Dennis Bryon's strong drum groove, and "More Than A Woman" is as smooth as butter.

Another artist who straddled the border so to speak between rock and soul would be the Motown great Stevie Wonder (who I got to see in concert in late August - I can't deny that I enjoyed it a shade less because of his lack of real Rhodes on stage)...the sparse lines in "Creepin" provide a spacy, ephemeral atmosphere to the song...Herbie Hancock's solo in "As (Always)" is one of the highlights of that tune..."All I Do" (a remake of a song he originally wrote for Tammi Terrell) brings out the high ends of the piano remarkably well.

Okay, I can go on.  8)

Wow you guys, amazing responses from keysandslots, Dan and the elusive Stranger, thank you one and all.  You guys make me believe again in the purity of my dad's genius and the popularity of his creation.

I spoke to my big brother Dave tonight.  I convinced him to come to this site and participate in this forum.  He has so much in his head.  When it comes to true knowledge to Rhodes pianos, it is my brother who knows.  Steve Woodyard taught him a great deal in the old days and my dad took him on a few Rhodes repair field trips where Dave was the repairer and my dad was the "field supervisor."  But I will let him tell you about those.  He will be joining this site and thread hopefully tonight if he can figure his stinking computer out!

Dave Rhodes

Hello, my name is Dave Rhodes.  I am the oldest son of Harold Rhodes and my sis Carol Rhodes-Rice told me about this incredible web site.  I am amazed at the interest generated around what I believe to be one of the most brilliant inventions the music world has ever known. Thank you for not letting the Fender Rhodes Piano (Rhodes Piano) die.

For the record... my brother Harold Jr. and I did in fact build Prince's plexiglass piano, but that wasn't the first one we built.  We also built a 73 suitcase, before the plexiglass, that he used at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento which I tweeked for him personally so he had a perfect Rhodes.  Back to the plexiglass piano... I spent almost 2 weeks in my own garage putting together most of the final touches necessary before the piano was picked up.  Prince's antourage made arrangements for the pick up at my house, and I never heard if he liked it, or how it sounded on stage, or anything more about it.  All I knew... was that it sounded great to me or I would have never let it go!

Dave and Carol, I have a potentially tough question for you.  Most of us have a favourite Rhodes sound, mine is Joe Sample's on the live Crusaders record, Scratch.  His cover of Carole King's "So Far Away" is beautiful.

I'm wondering if you would tell us who has your ideal Rhodes sound.  I was also wondering if you remember what your dad thought was the "perfect" Rhodes sound.

Welcome here ! We are not so many crazy on this discussion forum...but we are really fan and for some, have a special relation to this fabulous instrument called Rhodes !

I spend many hours a week to play on it, to take care of it, to tune and restore it !

It's like my Stage Piano has a soul, and i can go in communication with it when i'm striking the keys.

It's really an honour for us to have two Rhodes Family Members here on this forum.  :D

Hey thanks Spookyman,  Keysandslots, Jim, Taco, The Stranger & Dan.  You are all great people.  Now that my big bro is on the forum, he'll be able to answer your questions on what my dad might have thought was good or questions on the piano itself.  I'm guessing my dad loved everything he heard a musician play, but the instrument never sounded perfect enough.  That was his way.  I suppose that's where Dave and I get our perfectionism from.  I have really relaxed over the years, but Dave's business almost requires something close to perfection.  I have witnessed him being AR about boulder placement.  (Dave is a Landscape Architect with his own business.)

In terms of true Rhodes sound, Randy, I prefer a lighter softer more angelic-type touch like the beginning of Riders On The Storm.  I don't appreciate as much the banging sound I hear on a few tunes.  I think the Rhodes sound is a matter of preference for each one individually however.  In terms of favorites, I like The Doors, The Crusaders, Chuck Mangione, anything Michael McDonald, Steely Dan, even Billy Preston played a Rhodes now and again, Styx, Kansas...the list goes on and on for me.

Dave can tell you what sound he likes and he would also know what sound my dad liked.  My dad was a traditional 60's dad.  Us girls, myself and my younger sister Jan, didn't get to experience the business side of my dad.  Just the "dad" side.  Dave got to go repair pianos and actually work with my dad.  I would have loved that.  Also, my dad was vehement about not allowing us to work at the "plant."  He didn't want any hint of nepotism among his staff.

Wow Stranger, I'm not sure I can even identify a favorite.  I love certain riffs inside certain songs, but, strangely enough, sometimes the song itself is a ho hum for me even though the Rhodes riff gives me chills.  Chuck Mangione has a few, The Crusaders have a few, The Doors have a couple.  My taste is rather varied.

My dad really liked anything Bob James.  The reason I know is he gave me two of the same cassette (yes cassette) of Bob James playing the Rhodes.

Dave told me a couple of little known facts last night.  The first is my dad used to transcribe songs for Ray Charles and the second is during the period in my dad's history that is left off on this site (the part when he goes to Texas) he moved my mom to Dell City, Tx and he became a John Deere tractor implement salesman. (I knew all of this.)   Dave says he tried to alter (read that invent new ones) the implements to improve the farmer's yield and make their job easier.  This is so in keeping with my dad's personality.  My brother Dave was almost born in a plane as they were leaving Dell City.  Instead he was born in the San Fernando Valley.

Sorry for the tangent...

Dear Carol!
It was such a joy for me and this forum when you joined and also your brother. Your postings are wonderfully spirited and invaluable for us, since you are a "real Rhodes" and represent the direct link to our hero, Harold Rhodes.

I'm the Rhodes Supersites lead historian, and James Garfield ( founder ) and I just celebrated the sites 10th year anniversary last year. I'm also a Rhodes tech with my own workshop here in Sweden, where I pour TLC into loads of pianos that come by from all over Scandinavia. ( and some times from further away ) .

One of the seeds to this site came when I was asked to write the history of the Rhodes piano, for a Swedish musicians magazine called MM in 1996.
This led to an intense summer of research, where the absolute high was talking to your father over the phone. It was just before his stroke, so I was very lucky to get a chance and the honor to speak with this great man and hero of mine.

The article was published in Sweden and I sent a translation to James, who published it on the web as a part of his old site. It's now a part of this, and we constantly try to find new facts.

Besides being an incredible human being and a revolutionary instrument, Harolds and the pianos history is remarkable and wonderfully entertaining ( if not all wine and roses, of course! )

I have a thousand questions, naturally, and I'm very eager to hear any comments/corrections/additions about my historical article. I was especially pleased when you mentioned the " Texas era" and the connection with Ray Charles.

Could we possibly get in touch in a way that would work for you? My mailaddress is freddan@fenderrhodes.com, and if you'd care to drop me a line, I could give you a call or keep it a mail-conversation, if you want and have the time.

I hope you've had the time to browse the site, and also that you feel that we strive to keep it as true to Harold and his achievements as possible. We´ve been approached in many ways by different interests to change the contents and to give the site up, but we are strong in our belief and in our will to honor Harold as truly as possible.

Hope we can bring the Supersite and Harolds legacy up to new levels together.

All the best,

Oh, sorry!

I forgot to mention that the Plexi-Rhodes that David and Harold Jr. built for Prince was pictured and mentioned ( with a thanx to the Rhodes family ) in a Prince feature in Keyboard Magazine in 1998. I think it was the August issue.
If I find it, I'll post it here.

Actually, I think it's heavily featured on the "The Rainbow Children" album from 2001, and is still used on stage today by his pianist, and my buddy, Renato Neto.

Hi Frederik,

How wonderful to hear from one of the founders of this site.  May I say that I have spent some time going through it and I am so very impressed with all that you have achieved here.  Plus the members are amazing!

After all that Dave and I have been through, both emotionally and legally, we both detached from who we are for a few years.  Lamenting missed opportunities etc.

But I would love to converse with you in any way you would like.  In terms of technical knowledge and many more memories, Dave is it.  Harold Jr., my half-brother, was fairly young during the critical years, so I think Dave is a great resource.

I'll e-mail you and give you my info.  Then I'll ask Dave if it's ok to give his.

Blessings,
Carol

Whilst cleaning out our storage area today, I found some pix of the award my dad got from NARAS.  I am going to Costco  tomorrow to get a CD made of the negs.  I'll post them when they are done if anyone wants to see them.  Just FYI let me know.

Also I spoke with my mom today to inquire more about why they went to Dell City, Tx.  She said my dad had a student who had a friend who owned a John Deere tractor store in another very small town close by Dell City Texas.  He asked if my dad wanted to run his own store and my dad said yes.  He gave up his piano students and moved to Texas.  Mom said he was fed up with sitting on a piano bench all day.  They were there for a year or so and she got pregnant with my brother.  They went back to San Fernando Valley to have my brother and then took him back to Dell City for another year and a half before returning to California.

Later all,

'Bloody Well Right' by Supertramp was played on a Wurlitzer 200A...I only know of 1 0r 2 songs where Supertramp used a Rhodes, and some people even argue with me about them using one that much.

Supertramp mainly used Wurlitzers, acoustic pianos, and a Hammond.

Here's my big question. Everyone knows that Billy Preston used a Rhodes with The Beatles. Get Back, &  Don't Let Me Down are definitely a Rhodes, and there is even video of him playing one with them.I believe it had the felt hammers and the old tone bars and tines since it was 1969.

The only thing is, on the 2 briefs spots on the song Let It Be that use an electric piano, I hear a Wurlitzer. People argue with me about that one, (claiming they were impossible to find in England then, but that's not entirely true..) but I swear that is a wurli. It sounds nothing like a Rhodes to me. Paul McCartney is a big Wurlitzer fan and has used one many many times and even credits them on his albums with the capital T and everything. He even has photos of his Wurli on the last 2 CDs I think.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Listen carefully-it doesn't sound like Billy's Rhodes at all. There is a SMALL chance that it is their old Hohner pianet, but it does not sound like the Rhodes.

Wow, I sit corrected then. Thank you.  I was completely fooled.  Sounds alot like one though.

I'm not sure about the long Let It Be.  I'm sure someone on this site would know.

Thanks for the info!

yes they do sound a lot alike... do you ever remember your dad commenting on the Wurlitzer Electric Piano, being competition or anything to that effect?

My brother seems to remember that before my dad met Leo Fender, he might have approached or been approched by either Hammond or Wurlitzer about his electric piano.

i was looking at the studio credits for let it be (album), and there's no mention of electric piano on let it be (song). i am going to listen again to the normal one as well as the "let it be...naked" version.

The electric piano was removed from the "naked" version....
It's on the Phil Spector version.
