Hey everyone,

Research paper time for my history of jazz class. any jazz artist is fine, as long as it's not one of the huge names that we've covered in class. (louis armstrong, duke, etc.)

I thought it would be cool to write about someone who uses a lot of rhodes, and further my listening that much more.

my leading choices right now are chick or herbie, any other ideas?

Quote from: "pianotuner steveo"How about Jeff Lorber?
Good call for something different other than Herbie/Chick/etc.  His stuff in the late 70s/early 80s with the Jeff Lorber Fusion is full of Rhodes, as well as his more recent albums (pretty much anything NOT done in the mid to late 1980s).  The recent albums He Had A Hat and Philly Style both feature tons of Rhodes.  The only problem with covering his old stuff is that it's hard to find -- a couple albums were never released on CD, and most of the older stuff that IS on CD is through expensive imports only.

I'd check out Uri Caine, too.  Primarily a jazz pianist, he has used Rhodes in many musical projects and contexts, from relatively straightahead postbop with Dave Douglas quintet and The Philadelphia Project, to out-there electronica with Bedrock.  His approach is more pianistic than some other Rhodes-playing jazz pianists, who have a more "synth keyboard" approach on the Rhodes, at least to my ears.  You can find in-depth interviews with him at the www.allaboutjazz.com website, including some discussion of his use of Rhodes.

Besides these great artists, you should be able to find a lot of info on Joe Zawinul.

Those 2 Moulin albums are all wurlitzer and synth. No rhodes at all.
