I ordered a hammer tip set from Speakeasy. When I removed all the old tips and was ready to put the new ones on, I found out I lost the instruction sheet! Always happens..

Anyway does anyone have the Speakeasy instructions available? If not, what is the colour code?

The old color coding was very soft no color black, red 2nd hardness, yellow 3rd, black very hard, wood core.

Don't know if this is what speakeasy used, though you could probably squeeze the tips and rate hardness.

From squeezing them they go Red, Green, Yellow, White, wood..

Steve's Corner shows the shore hardness and the corresponding hammer they go on, should I follow the info that's on there? My piano's key numbers starts on 8 and goes to 80, and the site says they go from 00 to 81..

So judging by Steve's site, should the Red tips go on the first 23 keys, Green on the next 9, Yellow on the next 9, White on the next 13 and wood for the following 19?? Or am I way off the mark here.... hhaha

i've always wondered what's going on with the "81" in the tech tips.

and yeah it's softest to 23 etc like you said.
just as long as you go harder as you go higher you won't go wrong.

Are all Rhodes keys numbered slightly differently, or is there a reason mine starts at 8, for example?

Maybe we should ask Steve.

So all in all it's not really that important to have the hammer tips exact?

there are two ways of numbering, either 1 to 73 on a seventy three (which on an 88 is 00000001234 etc.)
or 8 to..80 on a 73 (1 to 88 on an 88)

hang on, that makes sense, 81, i get it, 000000012345678910111213 etc till 81 which is 88. yeah.

and yeah the exactness doesn't matter because they changed it over the years anyway, and also you can choose the spot to go harder depending on your preferences.  herbie's rhodes for example had five extra hardest neoprene in place of the top five second hardest, and all tips below were moved down by five, thus you end up with five less softest.

Quote from: "Ak_attack"From squeezing them they go Red, Green, Yellow, White, wood..

They use this color system because it's the one Major Key came up with, and they were originally reselling their kits.  They just kept the system when they (quietly) phased in their own set of tips.
