If I were in your shoes I would ask the guy who took this picture. He might know the answer of your question.

kind regards

Don't get the Russian made models. Don't get the Nano.
That's basically it.

If you can chose between old and new I would get the new one (top row, 3rd and 4th...made in USA). It has some improvements in the circuitry.

Don't get them from a store here in Holland, though (Feedback etc)...they'll charge you around €85-€100. I got mine off eBay for around €50...NEW.

i have the Nano. And i find the sound's not bad...no problem with it. Perhaps it's different with a guitar. But with my stage piano, it's working well. But i have to admit that i prefer by far the MXR Phase 100 on my Stage Piano.

I'm using the Nano Small Stone with my ARP Omni to obtain a swirling string sound...awesome. For ultimate Jarre sound, the Eminent 310 U and the ultra vintage Small Stone (first on the upper row) with a used 9V battery (less than 9V...) is the best way to achieve the similar sound !

But in question of look, the russian models are unbeatable.  :D

I loved the Small Stone, but I didn't like some things about it. He modifies new pedals and sells them at a reasonable price, addressing issues like volume drop, no true bypass, etc.

NB: I did not buy a pedal from him, so I can't vouch for the quality.

I think I'm gonna be satisfied with the volumedrop. Because I accompany with the phaser on and when i want to do a solo (without the phaser) I get a volume boost (which is quite favourable)
And the new Smallstones are already True-Bypass

I'd say, the older the better. So that would be the top left one. Stay away from the russians. I've got the one in the middle of the upper three. Nice creamy phaser with a vintage touch to it. They pop-up on marktplaats regularly. Another idea could be to check vintage guitar shops or markets. I've already seen quite a few of them at vintage veenendaal for instance along with loads of other nice classic effects.

Thanks I already know what phaser to buy (an USA model) Because Richard Tee used that one too.

First time poster here.

I have a lot of experience with Small Stones, as I've tried almost every model on guitar to find exactly what I was looking for. I will say each one has a different tone sweep, so this is going to be completely subjective. I ended up with a very early model (top left in the above pic), mostly because the sweep was the biggest and got the craziest on fast/deep settings; almost wah-like. Not sure if you're looking for experimental or noise stuff, but my early model can do that amazingly, while still doing a great vintage phase tone when slowed down.

The volume drop has never really bothered me. It's barely noticeable, and Analogman has a mod to correct it that's pretty inexpensive.

Keep in mind, that if you use a Harmonic Clarifier or other preamp, certain phasers will distort. Such is the case with my Rhodes. I have a Small Stone, Phase 90, and Phase 90 '74 reissue. However, the only phaser that mates well with the HC, is a Behringer PH9. It's their Phase 90 knockoff. It sounds absolutely fantastic and has no distortion. But it is a Behringer, which means people won't think you're as cool as you think you are. Either that, or you'll have to paint it bright orange!
