Just got home from the Return To Forever concert (during which Chris from Vintage Vibe called me in the middle of!!)...and well, I must say, Chick has always been my hero and Ive never seen him live...boy did that Mark V sound SWEEEEET!!! During one song he actually used a Rhodes patch from his Motif XS8...BLASPHEMY!!! But it was great that he did cause it only highlighted how much better the real thing sounded! As for the band, UNREAL!!!!!! Stanley Clarke's solo was out of this world!! And Al DiMeola doing a 20 minute solo on Spanish guitar that was mindblowing....as for Chick...well he's Chick!!!! And he's funny too...when the band first came out he introduced everyone by name then he said "and I'm Herbie Hancock" to roaring laughter and they began.......a perfect evening spent with my dad.....Chick Corea STILL rules!!!!!!!!

Totally agree with you Mike.  I went to the LA show, Abdul-Jabbar from the Lakers introduced RTF, and then Chick said "Well, I'm from Boston."  To a resounding but joking "BOOOOO" as the Lakers were defeated by the Boston Celtics this year.

Then Lenny White came out and said "now they have boybands, but this is a manband."

In the backstage area Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes showed up for some Scientology activity.

It was really great for me to see RTF as I was too young to be around to catch them live in the 70s.  Like you said, I've never seen anyone, anywhere, play the bass like Stanley Clarke.  I've seen Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, videos of Jaco, and a lot of other people, and Stanley Clarke by far is the best bass player in this world hands down for me.  The solo he did at the concert at his age, it's like he's gotten better with time and not lost his energy getting older.

This is only the tail of his solo I found on youtube, it's originally about 7 minutes long.

DiMeola sounded much better too, I always forget he was only 19 when he joined RTF.  Like you said I really thought his standalone solo at the beginning of the acoustic set was phenomenal.

Chick is my hero, and I've always studied him and model a lot of my playing around him, and try to learn his songbook.  I was surprised he's still using his MIDI Rhodes.  His playing was good, I feel he had more of the fusion energy when he was younger, but it was so great to see him live because he is Chick!!

I think Lenny White lost it a bit though.

Anyhow, if this show is coming to your area still GO SEE IT.

And a flashback

It's so funny to see Al timid in this clip like a deer in headlights being 1974 I think he was 19 then, but at the 2008 concert he was full on.

Lenny also said the "manband" comment at my show...haha...for me, one thing I can always take with me is that I got the opportunity to see Chick Corea play live as he is my hero as well...and I also model a lot of playing after him. All in all, an experience I'll never forget!

P.S. Abdul-Jabbar is a jazz nut. There's a cool vid of him playing with Dave Valentin on Youtube.

I believe he is just because at the very end of the clip when he's smashing the keys the audio levels sound the same.  Just a guess though.
