DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT THAT OLD FENDER RHODES ON THE MOVIE
"RAY" (THE STORY OF RAY CHARELES) WAS? TO ME IT LOOKED LIKE A HOMEMADE FRAME, AND OR  WITHOUT THE TOLEX IT ALSO HAD  A RED PLASTIC TOP."NEVER SEEN A RED ONE! UNIT WAS A 73 KEY STAGE, I THINK? HE WAS PLAYING (HIT THE ROAD JACK), WASE'NT THAT WRITEN IN THE SIXTYS? WHEN WAS THE FIRST RHODES MADE? I'M JUST SPITBALLING HERE...  :?:  :?:  :?:

 Should have looked around this site before I asked that question... the one in the movie "RAY'  looks just like the '63 –'64 on this site       http://www.fenderrhodes.com/models/early.html
(My own lil' discussion here)  :

VintageVibe say they sold a complete Wurlitzer 140 for the movie too ... (haven't seen the movie, so I can't say anything). The page where this is mentionned is> http://www.vintagevibe.com/fox.html but it ain't no red top, so I guess this is not it, and therefore not of much help.

As far as I know, that Rhodes doesn't exist...I was under the impression that "piano width" models did not come out until '65 when "Fender Rhodes" was bought by CBS, ie. silvertop models, and the only "Fiesta Red" model actually produced was the piano bass. (Despite the whole family pictured in the early '60's fender catolouge) Anyone have any more info on this?

jim

so while we're talking about ray,
what's the deal with the rhodes at the very start? it looks like a 1973 suitcase but it sounded to me more like a wurlitzer..

88keys

I think it's a celeste..
there's a picture of it in the models section of this site..
the rest of the info you need is there aswell.

i think when hes in the room and does hit the road jack hes playign a wurli. and i know in the beginning its a rhodes but sounds like a wurli maybe its tracked on from an orignal recording where he used wurli.

Fred

Definitely is not a Celeste... those where thirty some-odd keys representing mid to high range. As for sound...I was paying more attention to what I was looking at. I definitely need to HEAR it again, but as far as a model depiction...I still think that scene may be inaccurate...

jim

i'm talking about the one at the very start where tou can see the reflection of it in his glasses. i know it is a peterson suitcase but i also know it doesn't sound like one. (cause i've got one)

Hi!
Sorry for this late post, but I haven't been logged on for a while and also haven't checked all the topics.
The pianos in the film has been either modified visually or are actual dummies, specially made for the authentic look of the film.

The orange piano used, for instance, was made by the props department of the film from specifications provided by vintage experts who thoght it'd be a fun idea to confuse us freaks and actually make it seem like the mystical "Campbells Tomato Soup Red" pianos from 62-63 actually existed.

A great little joke on our behalf, but also a detail to contribute to the overall -60's athmosphere.
