Pretty sure that was a Hohner Electra-Piano (somewhat of a cross between a Wurlitzer and a Rhodes in how it works)

According to this page, John Paul Jones's electric piano of choice in the studio was the Hohner Electra-Piano, and specifically about No Quarter:

"Led Zeppelin's most obvious "keyboard" song comes from the Houses of the Holy album. Beginning with a long electric piano instrumental, "No Quarter" was Jones' featured solo section in the live show for many years. The Hohner is processed through an EMS VCS3 synthesizer to create a 'wobbly' sound. In concert, Jones extended the song with lengthy improvisations and duets with Jimmy Page on guitar."

Hi Dan ,
"No Quarter" was playing by a Fender Rhodes Mark I  on 1973 famous movie-album of Zeppelin.http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=VBsbCMIyG6E

4)" Faces" Gabor Szabo - Nice solos.
5)"The other side of the Abbey road" George Benson - Nice silver top sounds by Herbie- 1969
6)"Night child" -Oscar Peterson
7) George Duke 1971-1975 Albums
8)Herbie's all 70's albums.

Well my friend, it doesn't matter if you are not familiar with but you should try to download or listen one day .
They include  nice examples of different Rhodes sounds and also some are nice tunes for "every kind of ear"!
Cheers!

Dan Belcher

Loucas, I think the idea of this particular thread is thinking of songs people who know nothing about the Rhodes piano would know.  This is handy if you're talking to someone and you mention you have a Rhodes and the person asks "What's that?"  You can give them a few examples they should know so they know what the piano sounds like.

Gil Scott Heron - Winter in America
Nothing outstanding pianistically speaking, but it's definitely the song/artist that made me wanna own a rhodes !

EDIT: Oops sorry, I don't think "anyone" will know that song, so here's another one everyone will know I'm sure:

10cc - I'm not in love (beautiful rhodes sound with the famous MXR phaser if I remember right)

dead on, Dan !

I should have made my point clear.
for example:
you have to make a power point presentation about the rhodes.
first sheet: a picture of the rhodes and some hyperlinks to audio files snippets of famous rhodes songs.
so, to get a good start that anyone knows what you are talking about.

The fact that you can actually see the piano in the movie is a huge bonus on this one when you're trying to explain what a Rhodes organ is to somebody....

you can also see a rhodes piano in the epic Cheech and Chong movie Nice Dreams. Some guys jam with one and a guitar. Depending on who you're trying to explain to, this might help.

I just listened to it, I'd still say it's an early Rhodes, but it's funny because it does sound like a Wurly sometimes....so if our specialist(s) on the forum could have a go and tell us what it is...!:?:

(the song was released in 1974 btw)

My family's collective 13103 song iTunes library is on shuffle play right now, and I noticed that Rich Girl by my hometown boys Hall & Oates has a mean Rhodes intro that never even registered with me before.  I went back and listened to it about 5 times....

I went into my archives and dug up my copy of Killing Me Softly.  I haven't heard the song in YEARS.  It does sound like an early model Rhodes, just a very harsh one without much sustain.

Yeah James, the intro to Rich Girl is "mean" -- it's a bit of a tease, since it's a Rhodes, but a very anemic, thin sounding one that leaves me disappointed every time.   :P

Definately a Wurlitzer, not a Rhodes.  (If someone under the age of 40 asks what a Wurlitzer sounds like, that's the song I would point them to)

I dont know if anyone listed this one yet. "All I Do" by Stevie Wonder has a dyno-ed Rhodes and Im pretty sure it has the Tri-Stereo Chorus and the Percussion pedal mod. Im certain it has the percussion mod and Im 50/50 on the chorus.

Great example of the Dyno.  I'm not 100% sure myself though if it has percussion pedal, it almost sounds like a vibes layed over.  I could be wrong though, as I'm sure Stevie would have the most-upgraded Dyno available to him.

Problem is that the perc pedal isn't really all that great of a mod, it doesn't really ring out enough because it technically "chokes" the sound by throwing the strikeline completely off and bringing it back... and I think that's why it wasn't done a lot on Dyno Rhodes.  Here's a quick demo of my perc pedal for sound:

But your guess is as good as mine!

I don't think so

if you listen to the song all the way through you can hear parts where it sounds like he is using that pedal. Its either vibes (which I really dont think so) or its the pedal. You can hear in the very beginning if you listen really close you can hear the sound of the hammers hitting the tines and it certainly sounds like a percussion modded Rhodes. Now he certainly doesnt sound like he uses it thoughout the song, but it sounds like he certainly uses it in parts.

I don't hear what you're talking about, I just hear the natural sound of the Rhodes itself with a lot of treble boost (you can REALLY hear the metallic twinge of the tines if you crank up the treble on any later-model Rhodes!).  I don't hear the deadened thunk you'd get from using a percussion pedal mod.  There's a credits listing on this page for that album, and on the song All I Do, Stevie apparently played bells as well as the obvious Rhodes.  Are you hearing the bells possibly and assuming that's it?

You could very well be right... especially now that I have seen that there are vibes in the credits. But I do know that the Rhodes is Dyno-ed though! And that Stevie played the drums on that song. He is truly an amazing musician. If you want to see some sick videos of Stevie doing drum solos in concert check these out:

What the perc pedal does is decrease the sustain and just makes is staccato. It sounds like a slapped Rhodes. The "slaps" at the beginning is just how a Dyno Rhodes sounds when hit hard. Listen to George Duke/Stanley Clarke's Brazilian Love Affair he does it quite often.
