The fact that the D key is depressed indicates that the hammer is broken or missing.

It makes no sound when plugged in, so it probably has a bunch of dead pickups.

No photos of the insides, so nobody knows what else is wrong.  Maybe nice and clean.  Maybe.  The seller has sold tons of audio gear and musical gear, so I am very curious why there are no photos of the insides.

What are the markings or scratches or cracks on the keytops?  Faded magic marker?  I dunno.

So, I only bid $150 on it.

A lot of people don't like removing the top on the Mark V.  Lots more screws than just pulling the Mark I top off so might just be lazy / don't "want to mess it up."

By the look of the legs it's probably not an immaculate piece but probably not rusted too badly.

I might need to go take a look at this one. I've never seen a Mark V in person. I dont have money to buy it (broke musician) but I might be able to inspect it for someone on here. I'll try to contact the seller and see if I can arrange something... it doesnt look to be in terrible shape but you NEVER know without taking off the cover to have a look inside!

Oh crud.  I am getting old.

I don't remember removing any screws to free the top from my Mark V, hmmm....

When I get home tonight, I will have to take another look at it.

Q. "Where are you located in Charlotte. I also live in Charlotte and am an avid Rhodes player. There are some people who are wanting to bid on this item who have asked if I could check it out since I am in the area. If thats cool just let me know. Thanks so much! Colby   Feb-27-09
A:    "I don't think I would have the time to just show it. Plus, You would have an advantage over the other bidders would'nt you? I'm trying to be fair."

its a bit suspitious the way he answers that question don't you think?

Yes. Sounds kind of weird, especially the part about fairness.
Tuning instruments makes the band sound thin!

Very interesting... I would think if you were wanting to sell something and you were legit/serious about getting rid of it that you wouldnt really mind someone coming and looking at it. Very interesting...

I am guessing you were either being kind...or kindly sarcastic. Either way, you are correct. I've never had to undo any screws to take a top off of a Mark V. However, if you wanted to take the stand off (if it's connected) or pull the harp up, you'll have to undo screws.

RE: can't show piano out of "fairness." This is a strange thing for someone to say. He has time to arrange a local pick-up for the item but not enough time for someone to look at it? My guess: the insides are shot and possibly rusted (plus, look at the rust on the stand in the photos). The piano might not have been treated well in storage. If so, what a shame for such an awesome Rhodes.

The Mark V top is originally screwed down on the sides and in the back - the phillips screws on the metal strip link to a friction tightener clamp inside.  The top goes between the metal strip and the clamp.

If you haven't had to remove any screws to access the insides then either these screws or clamps are missing or not functional.  Otherwise it's often a burden to have to unscrew I think 4 or 5 clamps.

My guess is that the insides aren't all that great as you say.

Also, before I forget while we're talking Mark Vs -

The keys on my Mark V were not level, so I removed the namerail to put in some key punchings.

To my amazement, for some reason the keys were all suddenly level when I removed the rail.

Apparently, the rail itself was affecting leveling keys.  There is a washer underneath the screw that holds down the namerail.  Over time, this washer can sink into the compressed wood, and the rail will then sit lower and be able to push a little on the keys.  Easily rectifiable with a wider washer of the same thickness.

If anyone is having key leveling problems.

I have the same problem with my 79 Mark I. On the treble side, the namerail would push down a couple keys and cause the hammers to be raised and the keys to not be level. I added washers myself since the Mark I's didn't come with those namerail washers.

Well, I was really just being kindly absent-minded.  I have since found the two screws and clamp parts in a jar marked "Mark V parts."  I think they were already loose when I got my Mark V, but the top cover does show some minor scars where they were (at some time long ago) holding the cover down.

Thanks for the photos and explanation, Ben!  I guess I should re-install the clamps someday.

I stand corrected! I remember seeing that on the inside of my Rhodes, but I always let the cover rest in the slots without tightening. Very interesting! Thank you for the photos showing how it is supposed to be.

Oh no biggie, it was interesting when I first looked at a Mark V lid years ago ... I couldn't figure out how to get the damn thing off.  Thought those screws only held in the metal strip to the case
