I have a stage piano and purchased a new tine rod.It looks like it screws into the underside hole. It doesn't fit into the hole on the bottom face plate with the two screws. Should I remove  the plate and then install it ?

i'm having trouble understanding what you are describing.

Do you perhaps mean that you got a new Sustain Rod?

Don't remove the little aluminum plate from the bottom of the piano.  That is where the cross-braces get secured with the knob.

Your sustain rod pokes through a hole that is 9.5 inches away.  The fact that you didn't notice this hole indicates that you probably still have the black plastic grommet in the bottom of the piano (and you don't have a flashlight).  Look for a hole in the bottom of the piano that is 1.5 inches from the back.

Your sustain rod, when extended, just pokes up into that hole.

Welcome to the club.  Take a good look at the whole service manual:

Thanks for the advice ! I did see that hole ... when I look up into it it is looks like a wooden dowel of sorts .It does push up when I push on it with my finger but there does not seem to be any sustain when I push it in and play some of the keys ?

Could something be defective ? I'll try it again with the rod and pedal.

Thanks !

jim

ohh,

no it's just that your finger isn't strong enough to move all the dampers away from the keys.

that's where your strong man legs come in.
