Fellow Rhodes Lovers,

lately I had a little problems with other users of a german board regarding the style of music, in my case the music style of my band
Funkatized.
We our self carefully call it Funk/Acid-Jazz, but I´v been told it
was neither the one nor the other.

I was thinking that it should be up the street of Rhodes fans, so maybe you could help me and just post here what you think the style of this music should be called.

I really appreciate your help in this matter.

Many thanks from DeeGee!

Somehow my post was damaged, all the text is invisible - strange...
Here it is again:

Well, I think the "definition" of acid jazz is a dance music incorporating  jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop...and that sounds exactly like what you guys are doing.

Funk/Acid-jazz sounds like a great fit to me.

As we were talking about it, Sir Dancelot from
Jazzandsoul.eu wrote a cd review about our debut album
in which he categorized us as:

Acid Jazz / Funk / Electro

You can read the review here:

Bill Buckley from http://www.soulandjazzandfunk.com

I hate the word "JAZZ"
Nowadays, for the majority "Jazz" is a description for a kind of music they don´t
like (or don´t understand :D ) Other, less gifted musicans uns the Jazz tag
to make their music appear less crappy.

My opinion:
FUNKATIZED = cool 80´s Funk

Miles, Herbie, Bird, Porter is Jazz

But then in your words guys like Jamiroquai, Incognito & the Brand New Heavies would do what kind of style?
In my oppinion Jamiroquai is Acid Jazz par excellance.
Not that I wouldn't  like cool 80's Funk as my label

Jamiroquai, Galliano and Incognito were the first groups I really liked. For me,
it was the hottest music and it seemed to be all new.

Then I got (as part of a heritage) a huge LP Collection.
Everybody was there: James Brown, Kool & The Gang, Earth Wind & Fire
Stevie Wonder.... it was the same music and they called it Funk or Pop music.

But it is your stuff and I keep listening to it even if you
call it acid jazz (thats so 90´s) or nu jazz (whatsoever is new in 8)  80s Funk?)

But please remember: The latest Christian Aquilera CDs was advertised
as jazz, too

Lol Taco.
If Mr.Aguilera is doing Jazz, I must be doing polka or rhumba?

Tuning instruments makes the band sound thin!

Without a doubt, this is 100% pure electro-dance-funk.  Capturing the nuances of afro-latin bass grooves, disco dance beats combined with rhodes, synth, and vocoder.... thats officially electro-dance-funk!

That's what I'm hearing too.

I like the fact you have Rhodes in there, basically as an underpinning of the music. I'm a bit more partial to acoustic drums but that's OK..
Rhodes Mk 1 Suitcase 73, Mini D, Roland SH-1, Ibanez AD230, Ludwig drums, Zildjian cymbals, and various other musical toys
