2 Instruments (Rhodes and Clav) connected to instrument in on wah

Hi people,

Since I ain't got a mixer, can I connect both the Rhodes and the Clavinet with a duplicator like the one in the image on the instrument in from the Wah pedal, and back to the suitcase amplifier? (Via accessory jacks)



I already tried it. As long as the Clavinet has some volume, the Rhodes plays, and wah is on both, and vibrato too, but I want to know if this overloads something on the preamp or amp.

why wouldn't you try a boss ls-2 or a "stompbox size" little mixer?
it works great.

by the way, i use it to have  both the stereo outputs of 2 stompboxes that are mono in and stereo out(ehx polyphase and mxr chorus)...it took me a few headaches to solve that

I tend to prefer a mixer for this trick. I heard Herbie playing this setup on a bootleg (the Omaha one) and went out to recreate it. He did a typical clav lick, but with the left hand part on Rhodes, while both were routed trough the same wah. I call it the sixteen funkiest measures ever. I'll try to post a clip later.

But anyway, having the ability to mix dry and wet makes it sooo much better, so I think a mixer is the best way to go after this. A little dry clav in with the wah clav makes it a lot more punchy.

Rob, yes, Herbie did that but I think he had a mixer on top of the Clavinet, as all the videos show it. There is a part in the Hempstead concert that you hear that the Clavinet and the Rhodes are with the same wah too (on Sly, 3:39).

Jean, I took some time to realize that too:) (My zoom 505 is stereo too).

But what I was asking was for a budget solution, because I don't have money to buy the mixer yet, and I'm afraid that I'll damage the pedal or some of the instruments, since I'm a electronics noob.

You are fine.

I guess that you have the Rhodes and the Clav both plugged into your little Y-adapter, then that into your Wah Pedal, then the pedal output back into the Rhodes Accessory 2 jack on the name rail (or better into the  "External Amplifiers Channel 1 and 2 on the FR-7054 amp in the suitcase bottom cabinet).

You can take the Rhodes signal direct off the harp, or you can take it from the Accessory 1 jack.
(I have assumed that you have a Suitcase piano, because of your avatar photo.)

The Rhodes output is unlikely to damage the output transistor of the Clavinet.
The Clavinet output is unlikely to damage the pickup rail of the Rhodes (nor the preamp).

You will definitely get curious behavior when you try to turn the Clavinet volume to zero... your Rhodes will go to zero as well.  So, your setup doesn't allow you to set the instrument volume of the Rhodes and Clavinet entirely independently. 


Your setup could be improved with the cheapest of cheap little mixers.  Fifty bucks will get you the Behringer 802.  (The model 502 will save you ten bucks, but really doesn't have many gozintas and gozoutas.)
