First Rhodes 73
« on: February 04, 2015, 06:42:42 PM »
I finally delved into the Rhodes realm today. First one I've seen/played in person. Picked it up for $60 today. Has lids, legs, no pedal. Sounds great so far! Im guessing it's a 77? Anything to look for in particular? Replace? Should be a fun little project to get up and going. No rust on the tines or anything inside. Heavy as #$@% though. Now I know why everyone is trying to lighten these things up.

$60 is ridiculous for a fully functioning Rhodes!

Congrats!

Read up on the vintage vibe youtube for things to do.  Having been in the same boat as you, I took a peak inside, but it was actually in great condition.  Needs a couple damper felts replaced still, worked the bushings where needed, lubed key posts, replaced grommets, cleaned tines when necessary, hammers looked good, bridal straps were good.  Pickups all function and in good shape.  Really should clean out the volume/bass pots, but I never change them.  Voiced and tuned where I like it.  These are all the easy things you can do.  Hopefully you won't need more work, but you'll know better once you lift the harp and start looking around.

I'm still on the fence whether to do the miracle mod or not.

Congrats again.  Great price.

And I thought I got a hell of a steal on my Rhodes back in 2006 when I paid $200 for it! :o

Congrats! Have fun!

Yeah the guy said it was in the way. So I said make an offer, and then I made it not in the way. The pickups look good I guess. Don't look like the white pickups I've heard of.  Some tines orbit when they are struck. Is this bad? The note frequency seems to oscillate with it. It might just be my fluorescent lighting making it look weird too.
