Key Peds
« on: September 02, 2015, 05:57:14 PM »
Here's an odd one. I'm working on a Mark I Stage 88 (4876) for a client and noticed that 2 of the mid section key peds were off of the keys. Pulled those out to look at and barely touched one of their neighboring key peds. It came right off. After getting all of the keys out I find that all of the key peds (bare wood - felt on hammer cam) are snapping off at the slightest touch. Thought it might be from extreme heat so I checked all of the black key caps and they are quite secure. Bad batch of glue? Either way I'm snapping them off and glueing them back on. Running out of clamps though. Happy Tuesday!

I've encountered that, too. At the time I figured it was because of the piano being stored in a very humid environment (it did have a LOT of corrosion all over the place). Interesting to note however, that it was of the bare pedestal vintage.

Very little corrosion / rust on this one.

That's an interesting note.  They definitely did have varying glue usage, for example the glue used on pedestal felts pre-75 can be easily dissolved with acetone - Mark II era, not so much.
