Wurlitzer leg paint color
« on: July 04, 2018, 02:42:32 PM »
I recently bought a Wurly (200a) that came with legs painted black. When I sanded them I saw that the original material was chrome, but it had rust marks.

Question 1: Is there any original version of the 200a wurlitzer with black finish?
Question 2: Is there any paint or chemical treatment to return the chrome? I think my Wurly's legs are still the originals.

Thanks!

Hi .-)

Maybe you can restore the legs using the Cola / Alu-foil method (it really works!)

Although different models of Wurlitzer did have different leg colors, (some were wood, painted/stained to match the body) all 200 series had chromed legs as far as I know.
I personally would sand, prime and paint a silver color, then clear coat with the same brand clear as the paint to be sure they are compatible.

Thank you pianotuner steveo and Tim Hodges.

My piano came in black, rusty and poorly painted legs. I rubbed a small piece and saw that it returns to a silver color however stained with black parts. I'm thinking of using some product to reshape my legs.

After washing the legs with soap and water and using a rust converter liquid, I cleaned the rust pits off my 200A's legs using #0000 steel wool and lots of elbow grease. I then used some good metal polish. Repeat the process when the pits start to get funky again.

From 5 feet you can't tell the difference.

Not unless you get the steel legs rechromed will you do any better.

Nothing sticks to chrome well enough to try and seal it, like with clear paint. Eventually it will flake off leaving more work to even things out scraping off the paint.

The leg tips, used rust converter and then painted them with black epoxy. If they don't stay on, use some masking tape as a shim and the tips should stay on.
